Z60T Memory upgrade problem--1GB kingston ,turn blue screen!

#1 Post by yacool » Sun Jan 29, 2006 12:15 am

I got my Z60T 2551 about a month ago. I used it fine until recently when I try to play with nikon's pictureproject to edit photos. It was really slow so I decided to upgrade memory.

It has 512m ram. I called up compusmart they ordered 1GB ram for me. I picked it up today and the box read IBM MEM 1GB T43/R52 which seems to be matching with Z60T's PC2-4200. I followed the movie and installed it. Everything seems fine.

It really speed up a lot with pictureproject but then after one hour or so running, doooooom......blue screen with fuzzy character! telling me pc shut ting down to protect damaging system...saying dumping memory or sth ,.ouhhh. that hurts.

After system rebooted, I played a bit and then again,,,blue screen! this time it asked me scan disk , check disk or sth after I reboot.

I get into thinkvantage to check the system and select hardware diagnostic, a dos program run and I select memory test, it stuck again! even ESC cant get it out , has to power down and reboot, and thinkvantage again, do some other test , it is fine and memory test again, stuck again!

Reboot system and get online to get help! The memory is kingston. I hurry up to garbage buck to get the package box back , jesus, lucky i find it. It seems this is the right memory! The box has KTM-TP3840. KIN-50-1064, with kingston SODIMM instruction.

So what is the deal now? At least now it doesnt blue screen again when I am typing for help. I don't think I installed it wrong bcoz it is straight forward with the clip sound. I am going to play with pictureproject again after this message and see what happen, if blue screen again i hv to take it out and see any good sugestion or hv to go return it?

Download the memtest86 iso, burn it, and run it for a while. It is self booting, and should show any errors if there is any.

http://www.memtest86.com/

I personally would run it for 30-60 minutes in 3 different configurations.

1. Only the IBM original memory stick

2. Only the kingston stick

3. Both together

It might be that the timings are not a perfect match, and while trying to run in dual channel it has timing problems staying in sync, and goes into the errors with bluescreening.

I did notice that memory testing program, but coz last night didnot hv the writeable cd by hand, i used the pc doctor window version to do memory testing and it showed both passed.

After a few more blue screen, white screen crashed, i go back to compu smart today and they said the ram might hv prob and take it back, ordering a replacement for me. I will tell if the new one works after i get it few days later.

thanks for reply,

ciao
