Probably never. I haven't seen anything in the "official" IBM news releases that states that the R50 will be upgraded to the Dothan chip.

It appears that the R50p has been supplanted by the T42p with the 15" IPS (Flexview) display.

today (5/11/04), the R series webpage says:

"There is no product available in this category at this time.

Please contact an IBM representative for more information."

i think everything there is backordered.. or perhaps they're revising the R series?

I think the R is being phased out. Originally IBM introduced the R series to kindof please the A series users with a similar replacement. However, the size, weight, and specs of the R series seem to be becomming a bit obsolete in the world of thin and light notebooks. Are the Rs nice, yeah, but the Ts are nicer. The T42 15" models will replace the R series I am sure. The T gives you all the R does in a better built thinner lighter box.

I suppose IBM will come out with a new product line later this year in place of the R series, maybe. Something that is between the X and the T or something that is like the X40 but with like Dothan etc. The new series will probably be like the X31 is to the X40, similar but the X31 is faster and can have a bigger hard drive, etc.

But then again I am not sure I am just speculating based on past experience.

Not quite...

Good luck doing any basic video editing with any stock T42. This can be done with an R50.

At lease I found a PCMCIA firewire card for $17.00 on the net. Too bad I'll now have a card sticking out and messing with the form factor of my new 2378-DXU.

They were brainless not to include at lease a small 4-pin 1394 port on the 15" T42 or the T42p. They had to design a new case anyway for the 15" model. With Dothan, 15" IPS sceen, and the new ATI graphics cards, the T42 could be the best consumer videoediting laptop on the market. I've read that it can even encode faster than real-time.

I guess I just can't have it all. ;)

How can one encode FASTER than real time?

I ask as I think this would be potentially very useful in my UNO...
