Business Black Z60m owners, case strength question...

#1 Post by own6volvos » Tue Jan 31, 2006 1:33 am

For those of you who opted out of getting one of the models with the Ti cover, how strong is the standard black shell over the screen? How would you compare it to the T4x series in durability and in strength?

Not nearly as strong as T4* series in my opinion - it also scratches more easily. I don't think it will make much difference unless you whack the back of the screen or really stack stuff on top of the center of it but if it is a concern to you then opt for the titanium one. I don't think it is as much of an issue on the smaller screen of the Z60t but on the Z60m there is a bit of flex.

The machines I have access to don't get treated very well but the black cover one has quite a few scratches wereas the 'titanium' one is scratch free. I wish the titanium cover was anodised black instead of silver but even as it is I would always opt for it over the black plastic one.

So it is actually plastic, and not the magnesium alloy stuff like the older models?

Well, I might be getting both versions, so maybe I will just return the one I feel isn't that durable, or needed.

I have seen a few all plastic laptops that have been very durable (Apple iBook, all ancient toshiba laptops, etc), so hopefully it isn't that bad. Curious if the screen has wavey flex if you press on the back cover of the lcd.

Don't forget the Thinkpad R series. ;)

Maybe with the Z series, since they decided to make the option of a titanium cover, they skimped on the regular plastic cover and didn't make it as strong. Kinda dumb, I think.

The Ti cover is just not a thing that goes over the standard cover. The part numbers are different from everything down to the hinges on the laptops. I am guessing the plastic is thicker on the black versions over the Ti ones (if the Ti versions have plastic at all under it)

I meant that they may have thought that anyone looking for a tough LCD cover has the option to purchase the titanium version, and so the plastic can be skimped on, for people who don't care about LCD cover toughness.

i think it is equivalent to the R5* covers but I think the T4* covers are superior to that but i do like the sturdiness the titanium cover provides - absolutely solid.
