Processor change.. but to what?

#1 Post by Chiana » Tue Jan 31, 2006 10:30 am

I am considering changing the processor in my R40. It currently has a Celeron 2Ghz (M?). I have been thinking of replacing it with a Pentium Centrino 1.6 Ghz chip. Will this increase my battery life any? Would it be worth the upgrade (or would it be a down grade?)? Is this even possible to do?

Thanx,
Chris

Ahh, 2GHz Celerons are Pentium 4 variant Celerons, so the only type of upgrade possible would be to a Pentium 4 mobile. Since the P4 Celerons already have 256k cache, the difference in performance would probably not be worth it. And I don't think there'd be a way to increase battery life by swapping within the P4 family of processors.

What about upgrading to a Pentium M Dothan 2.0 Ghz and then using speedstep? Would that not increase battery life, or is this even possible on the R40?

I'm saying you're stuck within the P4 and P4 based Celeron processors. The Dothan Celeron M and Pentium M chips belong to a differently pinned socket with 479 pins, so that's a no go. You won't be able to put any Dothan or Banias (any Pentium M or Celeron M) in.

You may be able to install Pentium M (Banias) CPUs.
You definetly cannot install Dothan-core cpus.
Speedsteppign will help your battery life.

Post your machine number and it can be verified.

R40 2681-HU1. I have basically decided not to do the upgrade unless I have equal or better battery life. Thought about it and batteyr life is a priority now.

845MP chipset. No Pentium M then.

Pentium 4-M only.
