Screen Issue: Redish Tinge After Recovery Screen Saver

#1 Post by agoodfella » Thu Feb 02, 2006 11:18 pm

My A21p's screen shows this redish tinge upon activating / recovering from screen saver for a long time...

Does this mean that my screen is about to go?

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this something I should be worried about?

Any help suggestions?

Thanks

Does it happen when you first boot up the laptop?

If so, then the backlight (CCFL) is most likely going out.

No it boots up fine...

Its only when I am away from the computer for, say, longer than 30 minutes or so and then I "wake" it up... the reddish tinge only appears right away and then fades in a couple of minutes - leaving the screen looking normal after about 5 minutes or so...

I guess it's just getting older, but I hate the thought of losing power on my screen...

Typically what is the expected life expectancy of my screen?

The only thing that will cause the redness is your backlight. They only last so long. It will continue to work for a while the way it is. A replacement screen is under $100 or you can attempt a $25 backlight repair. I would wait until it dies though, unless the screen color is getting to you.

Also, if you can not see this redness when you first power the unit on, you will soon.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd rather get a professional to repair it...

Is there a place I can go to replace it?

Where would you recommend taking it?

Thanks

Redish tinge? You mean like a pinkness? I would venture to say the screen is probably going. Could be the backlight. Considering it's an A21 - you could do it yourself if you feel bold. Probably cheaper in the short term to do it yourself. The cost of the repairs by someone else would equal the street value of the laptop. (I have a a21e that I picked up for $200) The parts manual is online and you can order the parts off the web. Otherwise - you can take it in to a shop.

Myself - I'd break out the screwdriver and hop to it. It's not hard. Just be gentle with it.

Thanks again for the reply.

Is there anything on line which shows a step-by-step guide as to how to do this?

The last thing I want to do is screw up my laptop.

Also, when you say the parts are online - are you speaking about the Leveno website? If not, could you post a link. Thanks

Thanks again

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... M+ThinkPad

enter your machine type and there should be a manual for it someplace there.

Try this link for parts.

To get the service manual - go to the IBM link above. Look under your machine and enter the model number, machine type and subtype. You'll find every thing you need to work on your lappy.
