thinkpad r40 heat/fan issues

#1 Post by maleman876 » Sun Feb 05, 2006 1:32 pm

the fan doesnt ever seem to come on.

mobilemeter shows the critical shutdown and cpu throttle down temps, but has no entry for the active cooling temp. i can use the thinkpad fan control app to set the speed myself, but the fan doesnt stay on, it pulses on and off every two seconds or so.

running the latest BIOS and embedded software.

ok, update. it comes on at 60C
running prime95 and mobilemeter and watching it hit 60, fan comes on, temp goes down, repeat.

any way to make the fan kick on at a cooler temp? i dont like it running at 60C... and i dont want to have to depend on the thinkpad fan util, is there a way to change it in the bios?

If you are on Windows; then the Fan Control Utility is the only way I know of to make the fan spool up at a prescribed point. :)

There are some fan control scripts for Linux on Thinkpads on ThinkWiki; See

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speed

and

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ACPI_fan_ ... ol_scripts

The pulsing fan problem is fixed, at least partially, by the latest BIOS and EC Upgrade. Toggling it with the Fan Control Utility seems to work as well and eliminates the pulsing often times.

HTH :)
