Aeriously slow machines

#1 Post by ibmexpert » Fri Feb 10, 2006 3:14 pm

I got Z60t with 2ghz and 1gb ram but [rocessing is worst for application. Feels I am working on pentium II machine. I have never seen a slow machine. It takes forever to start any application. A acer $600 laptop with 1.7 centrino with 512mb runs faster and smooth. This laptop have processing jumping from 2 to 70 percent without any application running.

Please advice if any expert knows how to make this thingy faster?

That doesn't make much sense; I would recommend trimming out all the processes you don't want/need and going with the bare minimum. The last time I tried a Z Series, it was just about as fast as my T43. Check for Spyware as well.

Is it slow in general, or a particular application? Is it brand new out of the box, or are there any programs installed, see if things like norton/anti-spyware are running in the backround. Check the task mager to see whats draining your memmory.

It came with 512mb so I added another 512. But it is real slow and I get annoyed working on it. it is slow overall from boot to running a application. today evening I will try to take off the norton client security they included. But if it is thinkpad advantage causing it why they include all this.

From what you describe it sounds a lot like the Norton crap most places include. Wipe out all of that stuff and go with another program for Antivirus stuff. the one I reccomend (which is also free for home use) is Avast.

Check that the memory installed is seated correctly. I agree about Norton, it has become bloteware.

I have had issues with the non-corporate versions of Norton; mainly it eating up the majority of resources whilst doing little else other than bogging down file transfers by checking them. I use AVG and Kerio now, with the Windows Firewall turned off as well.

If you do try to remove Norton be very careful , follow all directions, this thing can seriously screw up your internet connection.

There is a nice piece of software floating around that will completely remove all things Norton, correctly and fully.

You can get a utility that can cleanly un-install Norton from Norton's Website I think

No, people have tried and failed with that. I will look around, but another company makes a good utility to wipe the crap off, because the norton thing leaves bits and pieces still on the computer.

Still; be careful when unistalling Norton. You might get some extremely long increases in your boot times right after installing it until you reboot once or twice afterwards. I did my Norton Uninstall without anything other than the Windows Add/Remove Programs Panel and some diligence in removing cruft entries in the Registry and elsewhere. It turned out quite nicely too. :)

I haven't used the utility, but I expect it does the same thing that the norton un-installer does; so it may leave behind a few trace files. I don't think it would fail in a quite obvious way.

The problem comes in after you unisntall it and some registry keys are left along with some files in random places, in the end it blocked my interent connection from anything it thought of as unsecure ie email, aim, winamp. I had to resort to a manual uninstall, which is just a pain to do.

The program to remove NAV if called "SymNRT".
Grt it here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_u ... SymNRT.exe

Norton System Crasher

#15 Post by Who_Me » Sat Feb 11, 2006 12:29 pm

The first thing I did was dump Norton.
It hung on the un-install
I spent 1/2 +hr removing all traces of it in the registry.
Search for symantec and norton.
Then removed it's files from the 'C:\' drive.
What a pain!

At work we use Trend and I have used it at home.
It seems to work well and has not caused me any problems.

my 2 cents

I have to agree that I have been very disappointed in the performance of my Z60t when I first purchased it. I have th 2.0 ghz model with 1 gb of ram. It ran slower than my 1.6 ghz R40 with 512 MB ram! I have spent days upon days over a couple weeks as well as two clean installs trying to figure out the problem as my unit was slow out of the box! I am no computer expert, but I eliminated some programs that I found to be a problem and my machine works GREAT now!

- Remove Norton with the utility "symnrt.exe" from the norton website. Do not use add/remove windows utility to remove Norton....it does not does not do a good job. I use AVG anti virus---very quick and very effective (Free too!)!

- My wireless had a hard time connecting. I ended up removing the WLAN from my bios setup screen and that significantly removed any problems I had connecting on the internet. If you don't use WLAN, why have it eat up your battery life?

- I removed the IBM access connections...the program was too redundant for normal use. It also had a hard time finding WIFI spots, refreshing or detecting my wireless card! Use the stock windows program.

- My first post on thinkpads.com dealt with the "logmon.exe" eating up my resources. I found out a great program called "process explorer" from www.sysinternals.com. It identified the the logmon.exe was part of the "IBM Rescue and Recovery" and apparently it logs or saves your settings periodically for backup. I removed that program and that helped my computer out the most! I had about 40-60 percent of my cpu being eaten up by this monster program as a "deferred procedure call" that would come up ever three minutes or so using the process explorer utility. I removed it and my computer is now running FAST.

- I had a problem with my fingerprint reader taking to much time. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it....it works great now!

- Run the software installer in the thinkvantage menu....update those programs!

- Remove message from bootup...have it run only when you need it.

Once again, my computer runs great now.

Hope this helps!!

Revision to my original post: I managed to see my computer running very slow again. I disabled my wifi and it runs much much faster. Process Explorer shows a flood of deferred procedure calls causing it to eat up my CPU capacity when I activate my WIFI. Can anyone verify this if your Z60t is running slow??

I know some people havesome problems with WiFi, which seems to be just the particular card manufacturer problem.

Does it run slow? Not at all. Out of the box -- a speed deamon. I uninstalled the preinsatlled Symantec Security Center (AV + Symantec Firewall) and replace it with Symanttec AntiVirus 10 Corporate Edition (v.10.0.2) -- much faster and that Symantec/Norton firewall is a piece of crap -- yes, it protects you by not letting you go on the Internet  . I enabled windows firewall and no problems with wireless at all.

Originally my notebooks came with 1GB and I added another GB right away, so I don't know if there's any dif between 1 and 2 GB RAM. Also check newer system updates from ThinkVantage System Updates. There were a bunch of updates just issued that may fix some probs you are experiencing :)
