Odd whining/buzzing sound in my Z60m

#1 Post by paulisme » Wed Feb 15, 2006 3:11 pm

Every once in a while I get this weird whiny, buzzing sound that comes from the inside of my Z60m. If I give the laptop a gentle bump, it stops. Any idea what could be causing this?

Sounds like your hard drive. When you bump it, it stops spinning to avoid potential damage to the HD.

From Lenovo website:

"The airbag-like Active Protection System provides unique data protection on ThinkPad Z Series models. Using an integrated, user-configurable motion sensor, it safeguards your valuable data by continuously monitoring your ThinkPad notebook and temporarily stopping the hard drive to help prevent some hard drive crashes when a fall or similar event is detected — providing up to four times greater impact protection than systems without this feature. And the ThinkPad HDD Shock Absorber provides impact protection from crashes that could occur when setting the notebook on a hard surface while in use — up to 30% more protection than the system case alone."
