R50 RAM question...

I recently (ok more like a few months ago now) bought a 512 stick of ram for my thinkpad. Due to an error on the store's part I wound up returning what I picked up and getting the right stick (don't ask). Before I had installed the 512 I found out I might not be able to mix ram. So I erred on the side of caution and swapped the preinstalled 256 with the 512. Well I've been meaning to find out the answer to the quesiton since that 256 is sitting on my desk at home.

Can I pop the 256 into the back bay and mix it with the 512 or not? I'd be great if I could, but obviously if I can't, ah well.

I don't really see a reason why it would not work if the 256 worked before.

I'm only asking because the guy that recommended my laptop (who works in IT) made that comment (to the point in my journal about the mixup from the store). I figured it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm used to old computers (and I do mean OLD) with just 32MB of ram, so I'd rather not screw anything up with my laptop. Especially because I don't have the money to pick up new ram and or any repairs in case something happens as a result.

My T42 has a 512 and 256, it works fine. I guess what I am saying is if the 256 was in place and working and you replaced it with the 512 that is now working and recognized, you now have a free slot for the 256 and it should show 768.
