A30 P No Video on LCD (Long)

#1 Post by mixz1 » Thu Feb 16, 2006 6:26 pm

I have an A30P that's 2 months out of warranty. Last year the motherboard was replaced by the IBM Factory in Guadalajara, Mexico (5 month wait for parts). Yesterday, on a restart asked for by an MS update, the LCD video died. There's no BIOS screen or POST information visible on bootup. Connecting an external monitor shows that video is present and that the computer boots and is functioning normally, minus the LCD. I obviously have an LCD related issue.

What parts might I need to repair the machine myself, and if any of you know of a source that would ship to Cancun, Mexico, I'd appreciate that information as well. Factory service is out of the question and parts are unobtainable here in Cancun.

Thanks in advance,

Mel in Cancun

If you look at the screen under a bright light can you see an image on the screen or is there nothing there?

Thanks for the reply. The screen is absolutely black. You cannot detect any screen activity. I even got a really bright graphic loop running and toggled back and forth between the external monitor and the LCD. Nothing was visible on the LCD.

Possible solution

I had a black screen on my A30p. I was able to get video on an external monitor. The proble turned out to be a loose connection inside the LCD housing.

Another question

I found an inverter card on eBay for less than 10 dollars. I followed the HMM instructions and replaced the inverter card. Perfection! Problem solved.

Here's another question: The HMM has you take the [censored] thing completely apart. When you get down to the last stage, you remove the bezel around the LCD (2 screws), remove one screw from the inverter card, 2 connectors, replace the card and then button everything up.

My opinion is that you can remove the LCD bezel and change out the card without removing the keyboard, keyboard bezel, Ultrabay, etc. Why does the HMM instruct you to do so?

Because they're STUPID. Been there. Done that. Won't do it their way ever again. BTW, same holds true to replace the LCD itself as long as your cable isn't bad. ;)

Agree with you 100%.
