Poll: Painted Gloss black Ti cover.

#1 Post by a31pguy » Thu Feb 16, 2006 7:23 pm

I know you guys are going to think I'm on crack.

However, the idea is kinda of growing on me. Have an decent automotive shop paint it high gloss black with several protective clear coats on it.

On crack or not?

High gloss no. It wouldn't look right with the rest of the laptop.

A matte finish to match the rest of the body on the other hand would look great.

Personally I am covering mine with the worst, most crude stickers I can find to detract theives, etc :)

Hadn't thought about the matt finish. Hmmm, that's another interesting one. I wonder if Levono had thought about this earlier.

I wonder how difficult it would be to prep the Titanium for painting. Might need to sand it at a certain finish. Powdercoating might be a better option. Baked on finished always last longer.

As much as I love the titanium cover for its strength and durability, I do wish it would have been anodised black, however, I suppose it would be difficult to persuade people to pay more for something which looks the same as the cheaper one.

I say paint it but I would factor in the cost of a replacement cover just in case, I had a bad experience painting a monitor casing before.

LOL! I'm sooo jumping on the "paint your thinkpad" bandwaggon.
Do you guys think it would void the "thinkpad protection" extra warranty?
How do you take the cover off? (i'm a girl).
It would be cool to paint it with a glow in the dark paint bc then i won't step on it in the dark.
I'm so excited!!!
Please let me know what kind of paint worked best for you....

Your display cover can be removed by following the procedures listed in your Hardware Maintenance Manual.

As for not stepping on it in the dark...try setting it on a desk.

hehehe, I'm on the same page here. I'm trying to get my cover chromed. And one pwder coated. But i'm not sure if this will work, cause the temperature you need for coating is 400. I guess the titanium or magnesium lid will warp, so you can't get it on anymore.

About painting, use the old 2 component piants, the really nasty chemical ones. They will hold on much better than the new paints.
