Z60m - received mine today :-)

#1 Post by Chuck » Thu Feb 23, 2006 10:54 am

Hi,

ordered the machine yesterday 2pm, had it in my hands this morning. That was quick...

It's a z60m with 100GB hdd, 15.4 1680x1050, 1GB Ram, titanium cover.

My T41p (exactly two years old now) died last week because of a coffee accident, but company insurance will pay for it.

First impressions of my new babe.

- fan runs quite often (have to try fancontrol later)
- keyboard on T41p was better (keys are louder on z60m and "feel" a bit narrower, don't know)
- Screen is nice, but definitely not brilliant, had hoped for a brighter screen, widescreen is cool :)
- build quality is good, but t41p was better
- pre-installed IBM software was annoying, especially the fingerprint-sensor-stuff (i have zero use for that)
- misses DVI and no parallel port (I knew that before)
- Annoying: little red (and dark) light for keyboard instead of super-bright LED on T41p

Overall... the T41p was imho the clearly better machine. But it was - of course - a lot more expensive.

bye!

Few tips.

1. DO NOT USE NOTEBOOK HARDWARE CONTROL (NHC)

2. DO NOT USE NOTEBOOK HARDWARE CONTROL (NHC)

3. The thinkpad fan control program works great, and fully compatible

NHC ended up conflicting with the ACPI bus on my laptop, and locked the fan into low speed. This was fine and not noticed doing normal things, but my laptop crashed twice during gaming from overheating until I figured this out. After the fact, I now use the IBM power utility and thinkpad fan control for my cpu stepping and tempurature monitoring.
