R31 Backlight

I have a IBM R31 thats seems to be having backlight issues. When the computer boots the backlight of the screen is off and will stay off all the way through boot. The backlight remains off but if you figet with enough keys occasionally and without any specific reason it will come on and remain on as if nothing is wrong. I know its not a software problem cause it isnt on at the boot screen. I tried updating the bios and the description says it will reboot after its done but it doesnt. Is this a hardware or a software? What do i do?

I have a similar problem with mine. It all started when I enabled Hibernation. It would go into hibernation/Standyby just fine, but when I go to wake it up, the backlight doesn't power back up. When I disabled hibernation, the issue persisted, but with less frequency. I read something about it somewhere, but I can't fint the page anymore. I doubt it's a harware problem, it never happens in Ubuntu.
