Anybody else annoyed by the loose 9cell battery on their z60m? Why couldn't they get that right?

That is my biggest problem with the z60m - the 9-cell is loose. I stuck a piece of folded up paper under it to keep it steady.

IBM has always kinda been hit or miss with battery snugness with almost all models. I stuck a little piece of black electrical tape on the laptop side of the groove, and made it all snug. Just do it to both sides. Also take care not to block anything.

docking problem - power loss?

#4 Post by laughingtonto » Tue Mar 07, 2006 1:47 pm

Before I send my z60m in for repair service, anyone having a problem with their unit losing power during docking/undocking? When I dock/undock either hot or suspended, my z60m loses it's power momentarily resulting in a machine that is 'off'. meaning, I've lost whatever was running at the time.

This happens about 90% of the time when I try to dock/undock. I've taken to powering down every time now and it's a bit inconvenient. I wonder if this is related in some way to the poor fit of the batteries?

The loose battery is more of an issue as to who IBM/Lenovo asks to produce the battery. On the T Series, Sanyo and, I think, Sony or Panasonic make the 9-Cell batteries. Depending on which one you get, you might feel some looseness when it is in. This doesn't, however, affect the connection; I took the keyboard off my T43 to have a look and tried to shake the battery (I had to not latch the battery in for this). For the Z60m, this shouldn't cause loss of power during the dock/undock process.

But she is an IBM.

I have had both Panasonic and Sanyo 9 cells and both are loose the same way. However, I never had problem with losing power while docking and undocking.

The Panasonic came with the z60m system and the Sanyo was a purchase option. The Panasonic had trouble with the external charger. With the Panasonic I could only charge to 85% using the external charger and then I had to top it up in the system. Lenovo opted to send me another brand new Sanyo as a replacement. I must say after sales tech support is superb.

BTW, I get a little more than 5 hours on a 9 cell. This is with brightness at level 5, wireless on all the time. My first Sanyo has now gone through 13 charge cycles. The second one has gone through one cycle.
