problems- anyway to fix it?

#1 Post by ThinkPad R » Sun Mar 05, 2006 2:51 pm

I have 3 major problems with my R40.

1) the ultranav left mouse button works, but it sank. it doesn't come back up.

2) the left iron hinge is still there but it tweaks and moves front-back when i pressure it.

3) the lock on the right side is bent slightly & i can't get it perfectly set--> it won't slide.

1. Replace the rubber piece under it. Find a dead ThinkPad, take a button off. Take the rubber piece from under the button out. Put it under your button. Fixed.

2. Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your model, there'll be a part number for the hinge.

3. Ditto for the slider - you may have to get a complete bezel set, though.

Thanks, but how would I remove the button?

The hinge isn't broken or anything, but I think the screw for the hinge is loose. Is there any way to break my thinkpad apart & tighten it?

You can take it apart, using your Hardware Maintenance Manualas a guide.

I read the manual & it said that IBM ThinkPads have nylon-coated screws.

They should be used only once & used ones shouldn't be reused.

So... what should I do?

You can reuse them again, they will work but then again you can order an entire set of screws from ibm pretty cheap - think i got a set for around $3 a while back. You get every imaginable screw and the covers for the little holes.

The Nylock function of the screws that locks them in is damaged by removing them, but they will still screw down and hold reasonably well.

Thank goodness, or I'd have been buying screws left and right for my X21.
