ultrabay 2000 device hot/warm swap question

#1 Post by cbcb3 » Mon Mar 06, 2006 7:53 am

hi, I just like to ask if ultrabay 2000 devices real hot swappable. Because everytime when I try to remove the dvd/cdrw drive from the bay windows xp(sp1) just goes into standby mode automatically. Hot swap/ Warm swap? I am confused.

I searched in this forum and google but couldnt find a good answer. Hope someone could help. thanks

I can remove my device while it is on, and put it back in. However it is not recognized until I do a stanby or hibernate cycle.

Hot swappable on some machines and not on others. It all depends on model. For example, I know that the Ultrabay was hot swappable on my old A20m but it was not on the R31 that I got to replace it.

You need to be more specific about the model.

what I have noted is that you have to "quit or close" the device.
but the rom drives seem to be always busy or in uses.

I seem to have no problem from the re-booting it dose but i think for safty I will let powe down till I figure out things.

Hot swap

#5 Post by schen » Thu Mar 09, 2006 12:49 pm

After 4 Ts and 3 As, I've noticed that they pretty much all behave a little differently on the "hot-swap" issue. My T23 does it most of the time, however my wife's A30 goes into standby automatically and then you have to wake the thing up and logon again. I think a lot of it has to do with the inconsistency of Windows, but some of it has to do with the software you have loaded on the machine. My T23 has little trouble with it, you can just stop the device and then remove it. Occassionally though, one of the pieces of software that uses that device will have to be shut down since they try to access the device continuously. A good example is that one of my DVD crunching software has to be exited for me to remove the DVD burner. The hardest is the HDD adapter. Some pieces of software will often be unwilling to release it's access to it. I had the MS Anti-Spyware software and it was the worse of all the offenders.

So, end the end you just have to figure out what works with your machine and software load.
