A30 fan problem??

I have a A30 that seems to be working great except that the only time I hear or notice the fan is when the machine boots up. After that I never notice it coming on and it "seems" to be very hot to the touch. I bought another fan but wanted to make sure that is the way I need to go. Is there anything else I can check out first?? Thanks
