no sound
no sound
Hello All:
Long time a30p 2653 64u user (4 years) first time poster.
The heart of the matter: No sound
Due to having a lot of clutter - malware, worms, etc - on my machine I decided to reinstall windows 2000 and get all the device drivers from the ibm.307 support site.
The sound device is from Cirrus Logic, Inc. with a Crystal WDM Audio Codec driver status=working properly. It also gives location: PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5.
However ther are other "sound, video" devices listed that are standard system devices with an unknown location all shown as working properly.
The master volume control panel is enabled but no sound.
Trouble shooter is no help.
Anyone have an idea?

I find a real time saver for problems like you describe is not to try to figure it out but simply reinstall the newest driver from the Lenovo-IBM Thinkpad support site. I would download it separately and install it manually.
By the way, did you do a full, clean reinstall? I have often found with Windows reformat & clean install is best.
I recently reformated a T23 with Win 2000 and did the IBM auto download and install too. Overall, it did an excellent job for me but I had to indiviually download and install a driver or two.
When I first got my factory refurbished T23 four months ago, the auto installer left me without drivers for audio or display. When I connected with IBM support I discovered a 2004 update driver for my audio.
I uninstalled the existing drivers first.

boy do I feel stupid
Thanks for your quick reply. The solution to my problem was much simpler, however, and found by accident. At the top of the keyboard there are three volume buttons - lower, higher and mute. I pressed the 'higher' button and got nothing so just out of annoyance I pressed it repeatedly. Suddenly I heard a little noise. Sure enough, the volume setting was on super low even though the the gain meter showed all the way high.
As an aside, I think I did a Windows reformat and clean install but I'm not sure. There is something wrong with the video card which causes DOS displays to show alot of gibberish. Some installation instructions I could see and some I had to guess at. I'm based in China at the moment and am reluctant to have this proble resolved here.

Since you are using Win2000, you might want to consider installing the Software Installerfor your system, so that it will automatically DL and install the correct drivers and other software for you.

Re-install the drivers & programs that process for audio (i.e. SoundMax).
For example, go to C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\AUDIO, and open the installer for SoundMax.
