R51 - power socket problems.

#1 Post by TheFlyer » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:50 pm

The warranty just expired on my R51 and with my usual luck the problems are just starting.

The problem now is that there seems to be a bad connection in the yellow socket for the power adapter, I have checked the adapter itself so I'm quite sure the problem is in the socket.

I found on the forum that for the T-series it is possible to change the socket without soldering - does anyone know if its the same on the R51. Also I have been trying to find the parts number for ordering the needed parts. I am abroad travelling so I cant take it to the local repair place.

Any tips?

I've replaced my socket on an Hp many a time without any problem and it required taking out the Mobo and soldering. Never needed to replace it on my Thinkpad though.

I don't know if I need to replace the socket or if it just needs to be re-soldered?

If I could just get the part then I could probably have the work done at any computer repair place (just have to hope that they don't fry the mobo...)

I spoke to Thinkpad support today. The guy said that on the R51 the socket is not soldered onto the mobo, but is (should be...) held in place by screws on a separate unit!?

Can anyone confirm this?

If that is the case maybe I could fix it myself, if I can just get the thing open. I downloaded the service manual, but dont know if I should risk taking the computer apart.

Yes, all Thinkpads have a seperate power socket that is connected to the mainboard with a cable and held down with a screw, supported by part of the case. on the T23, its supported by a screw in teh bottom of the chassis, in the T4x its supported by a screw in the steal around the battery compartment.

Looks like this: http://british-computer-spares.co.uk/da ... /11314.jpg

Thinkpad T40 2373-PU7 (1.7\2m\400, 2GB, 120GB 5400, DVD\CDRW, SXGA+, Intel 2915ABG, 32MB MR7500, GBe, BT II)
Thinkpad T23 2648-PS1 (1.2, 512mb, 2915ABG)

Thank you for the picture, makes it a lot easier to understand what it looks like. Now I'm just wondering whether the problem is in the yellow socket itself, or if that cable could have come partially unplugged?

I'm far from being a computer technician, so taking it apart might do more harm than good.

How difficult would it be to reach that part? And also, if I took it apart would I be able to check if the connection is good while I have the computer open?

Thanks!

(I talked to a (non-IBM) repair shop here - they needed 3 days, said there was no warranty and it was not very cheap either. I cant be without it that long)

Did you yank the yellow socket out from your thinkpad?

IBM refused to send me the part, so I had to leave it for repair. I am waiting to get the computer back now.
