Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 Mini PCI Added-No Modem

#1 Post by Wilsonflyer » Fri Mar 17, 2006 9:26 am

I just added a Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 Mini PCI to my Thinkpad in place of the wireless card that was in it. Of course, the new one doesn't have the connector on it to activate (power?) the modem.

I was wondering if there is an internal solution to the modem problem. Occasionally, I am caught out of town with no high-speed connection and have to get on to access client sites and a dial-up is the only option I have. I'd like to get this going without using a PCCard slot modem if I could. I can always do that if I have to though.

Is there a way to draw power (assuming that's a power connector at all) from somewhere on the system board for that connector? Has anyone done this? If not or if that's not what it is, is there a daughtercard option/solution that would plug-in and alleviate my having to deal with a PCCard?

(EDIT: Add-It's an A31. Sorry I forgot to mention that. :) ENDEDIT)

Thanks in advance!

Get a CDC modem for your A31! IBM part number 26P8477. There's several on eBay for less than $10 shipped!

No, there's NO power going to the phone connector (RJ11) if that's what you were asking.

Thanks James.

Wasn't very clear. Sorry about that. I was talking about the two wired plug that WAS plugged into my old mini-PCI wireless B card. There's nowhere to plug it into the new card. I was assuming that since the existing modem was on the daughter card with the nic (I thought), that this cable supplied power to it or something.

What was/is that cable anyway?

I'll order one right now.

Thanks!

The wire is probably the phone connector going to the unit's RJ11 socket.

Just trace it to make sure.

There are no combo CDC NIC/Modems available, whereas what you pulled was probably a combo WiFi/Modem. If you want to keep a modem in the unit you'll need to get a modem CDC daughtercard and install it.
