R52 Build Quility
R52 Build Quility
How does it compare to a T43? Looking to get one for a daughter bound for college. I use a T43 and love it, but want to know if the R is in the same ballpark as the T.
Thanks!
Thanks!

At least, ThinkPad R40 tweaks slightly here and there.
No. I don't think the R series is a turtle ship like the T series.
It's slightly weaker. The screen flexes slightly at the back too.
At least for R40, it burns on your left palm rest and at the bottom.
I don't get it. A31p which runs Pentium 4 is much cooler than R40 w/ Pentium M.

ok guys. i dropped my r40 again.
i have really bad habit of doing light work (not studying for test or anything, but reading a book, etc) on the bed -partly b/c my neck is weak.
anyway, while surfing on the web, i fell asleep.
then i heard crash! my thinkpad had fallen onto the floor & smashed into the steel base of a lamp.
windows safety live had restarted, so my computer was using the hard drive quite heavily.
nothing cracked like the last time i dropped it except that it is now the right hinge that has been weakened a little.
i don't think there is any data loss (any explanation?) either although it had no hard drive protection.
when i had heard the CLANK, i knew everything was over & hoped it was a dream and went back to sleep.
but today morning i found it still ok....
i'm bound to thinkpads now... whether lenovo or not.
For me, thinkpads actually save money (unlike other people) because I'm such a genius at making situations worse & destroying my own possessions.

I have the R51 and the build is very solid. I tried to press on the back of the screen but absolutely no ripples nor any sign of flex. Overall feel of the laptop is very solid.

That should be used as an advertisement tool by lenovo as it really touts ABS as a super tough material. I went to my local Office Depot tonight to check out the T-43 and could notice the keyboard flex on the mid right side. Strangely the Z-60 had far less keyboard flex than the T-43.

Maybe it's a little about perception, but I currently have one X22, two T40's, one A31, one A30, one R40 and one R51 - a lot of ThinkPads. I've also owned many others and I've recently had a T41p and a T43.
Without question, the R-series, to me, seems like the best built and most solid machines. I've also had an R30, R31 and R32. Across the line, the R-series are excellent and reliable. The R40 has an 8-cell battery as standard equipment that doesn't hang out the back, beat that!
The X22 is also great, but should be treated with care. All the T-series are flexible and should be treated with care, beautifully built, but delicate. The A-series are made with quality materials, but both of mine are somewhat creaky and loose fitting, as compared to the R-series.
I've posted it before, but the R-series are an unbelievable buy. Great price/performance/build quality mix. I often recommend them.

I want to share my experience too.
my ThinkPad® to my friend. He needed it to use it at a remote location
for doing some Graphic desgining work with other's. He returned back
after 3 hour's. I kept it on my table after he handed over.
i use to surf internet at night. After finishing my dinner, i pulled
chains of the carring case, And
the "stand by" light was ON. I shocked... I was considoring that my hard
disk is gone. I opened my ThinkPad® immedietly and opened the flap
of TFT , And i saw it awaked from stand by mode, i entered my log in
password and everything was OK.
for me. I bought ThinkPad because main reason, robustness. And it
proved on that day.
Once i remember, charger of my ThinkPad® felt on ground badly,
I thought tranformer inside the charger is dead. Whoops..I tested the
charger by attaching my ThinkPad® to power cord, it was still ok just
like elephant..Haha... Thank you ThinkPad®
Regards,
Amey Abhyankar.

My brand new R52 arrived with a dead Hard Drive (intermittent connections). Then, after a trip back to Lenova, arrived with another issue, which they repaird with a new mother board.
Although I was extremely frustrated after two trips back, I've been very happy with the machine ever since. It seems to be more durable than my old thinkpad (an r40 I think), which had a screen hinge break shortly after I got it.
Anyway, love my R52. Wish it had an Audio In, and will always miss serial ports, but otherwise perfect. I keep going back to thinkpad for the pointer primarily, but continue to enjoy the products.

Just a little heavier and weaker!
Consider the frame on R5x is made of ABS plastic compares with Titan on T5x. That's the major difference! If budget is not an issue, go with T's. Performancewise, no difference.

The T's are definitely great computers.
I have an R50 and it feels very sturdy to me. Thank goodness I haven't dropped it yet *knocks on wood*

Does it mean I can pressure the middle of the closed lid without damaging the LCD panel ? I would believe it could survive for T-series but the plast used for R-series cover does not seem to be rock solid. And no, I'm not gonna to try it with my FlexView panelfirestarter wrote:I have the R51 and the build is very solid.
