A30p Mobile Pentium III 1.2GHz Temperatures (Long)

#1 Post by mixz1 » Sun Apr 02, 2006 8:57 am

I replaced the inverter card in the above machine, and while I had the thing completely disassembled, which, BTW, I didn't really need to do, I gave it a good cleaning. I reassembled it and everything works fine. Out of curiosity I installed Notebook Hardware Control http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm, which immediately started giving me high CPU temperature alarms at 85C.

I used Intel's Processor Frequency ID Utility http://tinyurl.com/o7dqe to identify the exact model CPU and then I went to http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm#intel and looked up the specs for the Pentium III Mobile 1.2 Ghz CPU which gives a max CPU temp of 100C.

The machine never goes above 86C and never shuts down or show any sign of instability, but in reading the threads here about temperatures, it seems that these numbers are high. Can anyone explain the differences?

Does NHC work on a PIII? I thought it's for Centrino only. Maybe check the temp with another program, like MobileMeter.
Is the fan running?

NHC works in reporting the temp and agrees with other temperature utilities. The fan runs and IBM diagnostics pass on all tests. The question I'm asking is are temperature spikes into the high 80's C. normal for this machine?

It is accaptable, if measured under load. Idle temp should be lower.

mixz1,

I also have a A30p, 1.20ghz, use mobometer.exe to monitor temp. CPU idle..60.0C, 100% CPU..80-81C. I do not use fan control, just let the ThinkPad run as GOD...ahh...IBM, intended.
