R50e (1834) Upgrades (Celeron with no Touchpad)

#1 Post by geedoubleu-uk » Sun Apr 09, 2006 9:37 am

I am considering upgrading but am confused by the IBM site, can anyone help?

Celeron M 360 1.4 CPU
Fixed DVD ROM/CDR-RW drive
40GB 5400rpm Hard Disk

Can I replace the Celeron with a Pentium M, if so where can I find what speed my Motherboard support?

Can I replace th DVD/CD with a Ultrabay DVD/CD RRW, is it listed as not supported simply because you have to undo screws and it's not hotswappable?

Does anyone know what the maxium disk size is, and if 7200rpm disks can be used, do they cause heat problems?

Swapping CPU's? No problem. Any 400 bus dothan will work (1.5 to 2.1). The model numbers end with a 5, ie 1.5 is P-M 715.

The drive is supposedly "fixed" but it's pretty easy to pull out with just a fingernail and the latch on the outside. I think any "ultrabay enhanced" or "ultrabay slim" drive would work.

Not sure about max disk size, but when I installed a 60GB Toshiba disk, the bios didn't do anything to prevent me from booting.
