First Post: R series keyboard drivers

#1 Post by arco » Sun Apr 09, 2006 1:10 pm

Hi everybody,

For sometime now, I am the happy owner of an R51 notebook. I have only one (annoying...) problem:

The machine came with WIN XP pro preinstalled and, as a result, has the usual windows keyboard drivers. All the same, I am in front of an IBM keyboard and, as a result, I am obliged to remember the alternate keys for quite a number of locations...

I have already searched the net for the correct drivers, only to no avail!

It goes without saying that any help will be greatly appreciated...

Can you elaborate a little more on the alternate keys to which you are referring?

There isn't a specific keyboard driver to my knowledge. Even my T21 uses the standard keyboard driver.

There is a utility called Keyboard Customizerthat you can use to configure certain keys.

Thanks tfflivemb2,

What I mean is that, for example, I have to type ) to get ( on my screen. Letters and symbols are where they should be as per an MS keyboard. Problem with the IBM keyboard I have is that keys have alternate symbols printed on them and this has mainly to do with things like ()+=>?etc. Hope it is clear now...

The program you are reffering to unfortunately does not cater for situations like mine...

It sounds like you have a foreign keyboard on your system, and running an English version of Windows. (or vice versa)

Can you take a pic of your keyboard and post a link to it? If you don't have a way to host a pic, let me know and I will give you my email address, and you can email it to me. (I can then post a link it for you)

None of my keys give an alternate character that what is written on the keypad.

Hi again,

Here is the picture:

As I live in Greece, I use WinXP in greek. The keybord, though, is a QWERTY one albeit with the IBM "flavor" regarding the positioning of symbols.

No problems at all whatsoever with the other non-IBM PC's we have at home. They all use the same software but their physical keyboard layout is what I would call "standard". With the IBM keyboard, the key strokes are the same as in the other computers but the inscriptions on the keys (as you can see...) are altered. For example, on a standard keyboard, ( and ) are above 9 and 0 respectively. On the IBM keyboard they are one position on the left side.

Thanks again for your interest...

As the moderator said, please post a link to the pic, instead the pic itself.

When I asked you to post a link, I should have warned you not to post the pic itself, just the link. (Shame on me)

Sorry for the inconvenience caused...Here's the URL:

I am afraid there is no such thing as a "greek" keyboard. For example, on my main PC I use a keyboard without greek characters on it. When I switch to greek, I just remember which keys to press to produce greek characters, not present in the latin alphabet:

But, as you can easily see, the symbols on the second keyboard are - contrary to the IBM one - physically placed so as to be compatible with the standard MS keyboard drivers.

As a result, the obvious solution to this problem would be to swap the IBM keys with a set of MS compatible ones...(I don't even know if such a set really exists although I will try to find out).

LOL, first because MS XP Pro was preinstalled on my machine and, second, because it seems that I am the only person in the whole white world having this kind of problem!!!

I am not sure what it is exactly that you want, but it sounds like you have two different options.

If you want to use the keyboard natively, then using the program that I listed earlier, Keyboard Customizer. You can choose "Greek" from the drop down menu on the main page, which will change the character layout to Greek. (ie. Greek settings with Greek keys)

If you prefer to use the English settings, then you can always replace the keyboard with an English keyboard. (ie. English settings with English keys)

If you want to swap the keyboard, don't pull off the keycaps, laptop keycaps do not go on and off easily like PC keycaps. Better to buy a common English keyboard and sell the more rare Greek one, possibly at a profit! But yeah, don't pick off the keycaps...
