Dear techno-challenged,
I think the corporate version of norton is the only one worth consdidering, but since that is probably not an option for you try something completely different as norton has taken a back seat to modern day AV software.
I use AVG freeware version, and compliment that with windows defender. Both free. Practice safe-surfing and you can spend your bucks on other software or hardware.

thank you kyocera, i downloaded the AVG 7.1. something.
i have not removed the symantec antivirus still in my computer.. is it required for me to remove that.. will matter if i dont.??
i am not sure what the differences are with normal norton and corporate symantec.. and all those things...
but the only thing i know on the laptop is symantec antivirus.... and symantec client firewall...
i hope when the symantec completely expires tomorrow... i wont have any problems ...
i feel the AVG seems reliable though...
please let me know if there are any modifications i have to make to the AVG options to make it work automatically ...
thank you very much again for your help.

The symantec corporate that came with my z60t is one horrible piece of software, if you do any kind of networking expect to ahve some kind of trouble and using remote desktop is out of the question unless you jsut turn symatec off.
There are plenty of free programs out there, that will do the job jsut as well, and wont have such harsh settings.

Contrary to some views here, if you are happy with what you have, just renew it (it only came good for ninety days initially). You won't have to install anything - just renew the subscription. Symantec makes that part pretty painless. Then over time, if you become unhappy or wish to switch, then do so. You said you were new to laptops, and I am trying to make things simple for you. Only switch if you are unhappy. ... JD Hurst

You can remove norton using the add/remove programs in windows. It is definately a good thing to remove it for a couple of reasons, it may not like AVG and it takes up a lot of system resources, you should notice and increase in performance when it is out of the system. AVG runs seamlessly, downloads are fast and non-obtrusive. Just make sure you are set to receive updates through the control center and you are good to go.I have not removed the symantec antivirus still in my computer..
Actually I do networking and the corporate version is the only one I don't have to tweak the hell out of when i load a device on a customers network. Norton internet security and McAfee really not entirely network friendly as they want to block every freaking port none to man (yes I know this is considered a good thing), probably OK for a home user with a decent running machine.
Windows defender is the upgrade of Windows Anti-Spyware beta, you need service pack two to use it. Download it from microsoft.com.what is windows defender... ????????
I've been using Norton AV for the past couple of years, and it's been alright by me. That's not to say there may be better ones out there. I am considering trying Kaspersky next go around.

IMHO, I suggest if you are thinking of keeping Norton AV, upgrade online if the year version of your existing Norton AV is the same as the current year version available. In other words, if you are using Norton AV 2006 now, then just renew online. If you are using Norton AV 2005 now, then buy Norton AV 2006.

i was wondering ... to remove the symantec antivirus and client security... do i just change/remove all the programs that have the word symantec in them from the remove program list..
and one more thing is that... unfortunately.. i already know i have a set of viruses in my desktop at home.. and even though i have comcast provided mcafee security... nothing seems to get rid of the viruses and clean my desktop.. is there anything i can do to clean everything out of the computer and start over..

Often times the best solution is to do a clean reinstall of Windows. It is time consuming, but at least you know you got rid of everything. Of course to do this you need a Windows Install CD, or a System Recovery CD from the computer manufacturer. When you start the install, choose to format the hard drive, to remove all existing software. If you have more than one partition on the hard drive, you will need to format the other partitions as well.jesical98 wrote:and one more thing is that... unfortunately.. i already know i have a set of viruses in my desktop at home.. and even though i have comcast provided mcafee security... nothing seems to get rid of the viruses and clean my desktop.. is there anything i can do to clean everything out of the computer and start over..
Viruses and Spyware can often times be difficult to eradicate. If it is only one virus that you are infected with, Google the virus name, and you may find a removal tool somewhere. Be careful that you get the removal tool from a reputable source.
