A31 upgrade video memory?

#1 Post by cybercorsair » Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:31 am

Ok this is my A31:
IBM ThinkPad A31 Laptop P4 CDRW 15"LCD model 2652-C4U
* Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 1.6GHz
* 256MB DDr 2100 ram <--- now has 1gig of ram
*the ebay ad said it has a ATi graphics radeon 7500 32meg but sis sandra it may have 16megs.. not sure if it is reading right.

Sorry if this has been asked before but searching the site didn't show me any topics on this and there were around 7000+ that list in my search is a bit to read thourgh.
Ok I was wondering if the video memory is upgradeable or is the memory I have all I can get out of the system?

Ok thanks

Go to your Display Properties > Settings > Adapter. There you should find the memory size und "Adapter Information".

Edit: Well, Sandra is right. Tawbook says 16MB. An upgrade is not possible, AFAIK. You should contact the seller for compensation...

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)
For sale: n/a

Ok thanks... should remeber thaty one for looking it up .. 32 would have been better but guess 16 is what have will talk to the seller but it been a bit..don't think he can do much about it as I have lot instlled in this system now.
I did add more system memory(up to 1 gig) and hear i can do 2gigs. would a faster CPU help? I was thinking of doing that later.

ok thanks

You might be able to swap out the motherboard completely. There are A31p motherboards with 64 mb of video ram.

I got and email back from the guy on ebay(they are a group that sells laptops out on ebay.) and he said that all the info he has in the A31 and A31p saids that the A31 should have 32 megs and he sent this link http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 1#graphics

It dose say the that is should be 32 megs but is some what confusing.

The confusion arises from the fact that some A31 models shipped with 16MB VRAM and some shipped with 32MB, it all depends on the display.

15" SXGA+ models shipped with 32MB VRAM. All other models shipped with 16MB VRAM.

James as always is right.

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... awbook.pdf

Page 20 - Graphics controller section is 4th from the top and it says that the 2652-C4U along with every other model listed on that page shipped with 16MB.

In the final analysis, tabook/tawbook is LAW, anything else is rhetoric.

Wasn't trying to say anyone here was wrong just that the guy i got the A31 from seems to think that the IBM site is stating ALL A31 have 32 and ALL A31p have 64.. he isn't looking at model 3 as in 2652-C4U I think.

Ok thanks
