#1 Post by pandel » Sat Apr 15, 2006 4:15 pm

is there anyway to bypass or remove the "power on" password from an ibm thinkpad r52 ???

i tried to remove the backup battery with no succes

is there a clear cmos jumper on the motherboard of the laptop or is another solution that might solve my problem ????

the power on password appears before booting...i cannot enter the bios because i don't know this password....

the laptop had before SafeGuard Easy 1.41 installed, but my sister didn't use to much this thinkpad and the account made in SafeGuard expired :? I went to a friend with a laptop and i formated the HDD, but the Bios was protected by a password and i wasn't abble to select the dvd-rw as a primary boot device (only the hdd and the usb floppy were selected in the bios)

before i removed the backup battery was another password needed (i think....but i'm not sure because i didn't give much importance to the icon asociated with the type of password)

i hope to resolve this problem as soon as possible...otherwise 1200 euro were dropped on trash.

i hope that you are not saying that you paid for a thinkpad that is locked..?
if so, i hope that you have recourse bback to the seller..
is this another ebay deal gone wrong..?

i perform this service if you are located in NYC. otherwise, it can be very expensive or tricky. on ebay there is a guy that sells a new CMOS (pwcrack is the user ID) and there is another guy that sells info on how to do it yourself. there is no way to remove the password, only to retrieve it or replace it (by replacing the actual chip).

Why not just call the police, tell them you (unknowingly, I hope) bought a stolen laptop, and provide the details of who you bought it from?

i expect the documents of buying and hope to solve my problem.
i've heard that the password is sented after the purchase of the ibm laptops.....if not i will go with the Thinkpad and the needed documents to a local subsidiary from my country and i'll sove my problem.

the product is not buyed from ebay

Not exactly. If you bring a locked laptop to IBM, the first thing they will do is check if it is stolen. If it's not, they will politely explain that the only way to clear an unknown password is to replace the system board, and could they please have $900 (or the equivalent in your currency). It's not entirely true that there is no other way to clear it, but there is no other way that IBM supports.

As far as the password being sent after the purchase, that's a good one. I've never heard that before, sounds to me like someone wants to stall you until your check clears and they can get out of town.

Seriously - if you paid good money for a locked laptop you are the victim of fraud. If the seller is telling you stories and not refunding your money, you need to be talking to the authorities.

Well, then you have basically three options.

1. Use the laptop for a doorstop.
2. Pay someone a good chunk of cash to unlock it, and hope they don't screw it up in the process.
3. If your good with electronics you can build an interface circuit to read the EEPROM, solder it to the chip, use another computer to read the contents, and then decode the file to uncover the password.

Googling Thinkpad Password Removal will provide a list of links for the last two options.

If it was me I'd be getting my money back or calling the cops. But that's just me. If you're happy with your purchase, then ok.
