IBM r50e laptop not booting

#1 Post by realdan » Sat Apr 29, 2006 4:12 am

Here is what happened
It displayed the startup IBM screen,
The hdd started spinning and
after that i can only see a blank black screen and a cursor(msdos type) at the top left.,
the hdd stopped spinning

i can access the BIOS
when i changed the boot from quick to diagnostic
i saw that the memory check is fine. and after the bootagent load, it displayed the above mentioned blank screen screen.

then i change the boot sequence by excluding the dvd drive and leave the hdd on the list only
i managed to get to the options for safe mode, start normally..etc
when i select safe mode, the loading of drivers stop after mup.sys...
and when i select start normally or last know good configuration then it got stuck in the windows logo...i dont see the dots below moving..everything just freezes there..

I have detach the hdd and put it back
i have detach the dvd drive and put it back
i have detach the battery and left it out for a day or so

but all i m getting is the same problems
would some expert out there point me out what is wrong?

I think it's a common problem in R50e series ? because i had
the same problem last month. I was using dual boot OS's.
Windows XP and Mandriva linux 2006.

When i put Windows XP bootable CD and said boot from CD rom,
it was showing nothing but blank screen, and hdd LED went off
after 50-60 second's. And when i pressed any key it was making
typical sound of invalid key error likewise.

Afterward's i updated BIOS to latest 2.08 . I didnt see that
problem afterward's. It was a [censored] big head ache for me.
I put Windows® 2000 Pro Cd and then i saw activity, setup
went on and i upgraded to Windows XP , i did mistake again
by trying to be smart ..Ha ..I was modifying "ntoskrnl.exe" ..
to change Windows XP booting spalash screen. And alas .....
Windows again crashed down. I put Windows XP bootable
license copy CD , but same problem occured. Blank screen .
Again i had no option but to put Windows 2000 CD , i tried
to use fdisk to recreat C:/ drive , it was before formatted with
NTFS file system by me by "Disk Manager" utility. But i am still
not sure about that weird problem. But i guess our problem is
same. Try to update BIOS , might will solve your problem.

Mine is Thinkpad® R50e-1834-EQ1

Centrino 1.5 , 256 MB , 40 GB ( Toshiba MX ) etc ...

Regard's,
Amey .

Looks like a fairly common problem in general - http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=n ... =mup%2Esys

Some things to try:

Remove any USB devices. If that doesn't work attach a USB mouse, boot until it hangs then disconnect the USB mouse, wait a few seconds.
Reseat the keyboard.
Use a Windows XP CD to get into revcovery console and replace the mup.sys file with a clean copy from the CD.

If none of those help post back with a description of the networking environment the machine is in. According to the MSKB mup.sys is the Multiple Universal Naming Convention Provider driver. Not entirely sure what that is or does, but it sounds like it's involved with networking and arbitration between multiple network architectures.

Good luck.

thanks guys for the reply

actually after much troubleshooting..
i found out it is actually the cd-rw/dvd drive that is causing the the laptop to hang while loading windows or during boot

when i removed the cd-rw/dvd drive from the laptop.
I can boot the laptop and start the windows XP

this has me puzzled
why windows wont boot when the cd-rw/dvd drive is installed.
could you give me an idea what is wrong?
