Memory Upgrade for R50e [Accomplished]

#1 Post by Legionnaire » Wed May 03, 2006 2:52 pm

Hi all.

I have an R50e with 512 DDR PC2700 and want to add another SO-DIMM to increase its capabilities. Corsair 1GB PC2700 seems like a good idea.

Here's the strange thing: CPU-Z reports that my 512 DIMM runs at 166MHz. I though PC2700 had a frequency of 333MHz. Are there gonna be any problems with the memory upgrade? Obviously if my current memory runs at 166MHz then all 1.5GB will run at that frequency.

[Update]

Well, I got the package today and performed the upgrade with extreme caution. It turned out that both DIMMs run at 166MHz (as predicted).

I have turned off pagefile since the factory-default hard disk is too slow for constant read/write by an OS that fails tragically to manage Virtual Memory.

The overall experience didn't leave me with the impression of a performance super-boost but at least now I can give 512MB RAM to VMWare (running Slackware 10.2) and still not worry about remaining memory.

"DDR" is dual data rate. So the specs can say either 166 Mhz or 333 MHz, which means the same thing.

Also, CPU-Z might be wrong, the R50e has the i855GM chipset which only runs at 133/266 Mhz. You can use PC2700 RAM, but it only works at the slower speed.
