Z60M GPU...can it be changed???

#1 Post by SatDoug » Wed May 03, 2006 9:04 pm

Hi All:
I know the Z60M comes with 128MB ATI Mobility RADEON x600 for its Graphics. Is there a way to ever upgrade this GPU, like can be done with a card on a desktop PC? I'm thinking no (there is nothing about it in the hardware manual for the Z60M), but thought I'd ask. I am considering the Z61M when available and figure it will probably have the same GPU (if only it could come with 256 of RAM!). Thanks!

I don't think there is a way to do it; at least, I haven't heard of a Thinkpad where you could pull out the GPU and put a new one in since all the ones I have seen are soldered in.

There are, however, some laptops where you can upgrade the GPU; but there are few of them out there. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Can a zebra change it's coat? In a word: no.

You may be able to put a video card in a docking station, but I am not too familiar with that. Of course you would have to use it with an external monitor to see any benefit.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think it was possible, but I thought I'd give it a shot! The docking station is an interesting idea, but I don't think it's worth the cost/hassel, even if it were possible. I think I'll go the route of emailing Lenova and asking for a faster GPU with more memory :-). Have a good day, all.

Video is part of the board so cannot be upgraded for use on the current LCD. I wish we could, I have an Intel I'd love to upgrade. For general use it's just fine, but there is always room for future improvement.
