Runing Hot

#1 Post by PegClarke » Thu May 04, 2006 6:35 pm

I've got a Z60t which is running very hot- so hot I can't keep it on my lap and I'm afraid it will burn the table.

Anyone else have this problem? Could my fan be broken? How would I know? Does anyone know what I can do about this?

If it is that hot, I would recommend that you contact Lenovo for service. Your system should not be that hot, especially if you haven't modded it.

agreed. Something is probably wrong. My z60t generally runs quite cool, with the fan off or at low speed.

Can you be specific about where on the Z60t it is hot? For example: underneath the system fan, or the lower right hand side.

Danger! Will Robinson Danger!

The Pentium M series processor should run much cooler. I would suggest run - don't walk to the phone and get a service call from levono.

Cooler

#6 Post by PegClarke » Fri May 05, 2006 6:23 pm

Today it's much cooler.

The bottom was very hot, specifically on the left side towards the back. The fan seemed to be working b/c it was blowing out hot air, although I couldn't hear it.

Today, it's back to normal.

I'm liking this thinkpad, but not loving it. It's had a few problems so far and it's less than 2 months old. I've already had to do a full rescue and recovery, the disks for which Leveno charges $60 aside from the lost files due to the crash.

Hmm

It is possible that a process in Windows got stuck, causing your CPU to run at 100% utilization.

This sometimes happens to me with Microsoft Word 2000. When I close word, the Word.exe process fails to close, and for some reason makes the CPU run at 100%. This causes my ThinkPad to run very hot until I manually shut the process.

To access the task manager, right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager, then go to the Processes tab. See if there are any processes besides System Idle Process that are eating your CPU cycles. Check the CPU usage indicator as well. If it is at 100% the CPU will generate lots of heat.

38 and even 44 is nowhere near hot, since these mobile chips can handle temperature in the 70s easily. They will turn themselfs off before they get to any dangerous temperatures. The celeron in my z60t @1.86Ghz runs idle at around 43 and can get to mid 50s under stress, I consider that to be well with in limits.

38 is not bad. My 1.3 GHz chip is idling at about 36.

In comparison, my Athlon 1.47 GHz idles at 45-49 depending on the ambient temperature.

It's best not to sit the computer on your lap. There is no place for the heat to go, and it will get warmer where it touches your leg.

I use an X-Pad, it's inexpensive, light, fits in your laptop case easily and keeps the computer cool. In addition, it has a non slip bottom which makes it really nice and easy to use on your lap.

Here is the link.
