A22p overheats w/Lucent Orinico Silver

A22p, Win2k with latest updates, 512MB RAM. Using the USB port to connect to my DSL modem, the thing will run all day long. Using a Lucent Orinoco Silver 802.11 PCMCIA card, the notebook overheats and shuts off within 25-30 minutes, even when sitting idle (ie, no network traffic except keepalives).

About two years ago I was running the exact same config, A22p with Lucent Orinoco Silver, Win2k. No problems.

Only difference is that now I am running Avast and Prevx. Could either of these pieces of software be contributing to the problem?
