DVD player region
DVD player region
Why is it that we can only change the region a certain amount of times?? Anyway around this?
Z60m - 15.4"/1.86gHz/1GB/ATI64MB
It is an easy $40 solution...

This software works great. I watch dvds of any region without having to do anything and not worry about switching regions/running out of allotted switches. It recognizes what region the dvd is when inserted and does its thing.
Why only a certain amount of times? The economics of it is my guess. It would allow people access to a greater market of movies before they are released in their respective countries for example. Having the regions can help limit this by making it difficult to play other regioned disks.

It is yet another DRM (Digital Rights Management) featre designed to allow the companies to sell more copies of their movies without actually having to make any significant changes (other than language/subtitles).

region free on Matshita drive on Z60m
Hi,
I just got a new Z60m and, since I live in Japan, have same desire to watch dvd from mulitple regions. I checked the dvd-region-free site linked in post above.
However they specifically note that:
"NOTE: DVD-RAM, Matshita XX-8xxx, SW-9xxx series DVD drives, and Torisan DRD-Uxxx series DVD drives are not supported now, and there is no plan to support them. But you can watch and copy CSS encrypted DVD movies when the drive region and disc region is matched on these DVD drives"
My drive is: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-830Sx
Has anyone tried the dvd-region-free soft with this Matshita drive?
I don't mind to pay the $40 so I can constantly switch between dvds bought in Japan and ones bought in Canada or US - but only if its reasonably sure to work. Definitely do not want that dvd region switch number to get down to "0"
Thanks in advance, Jasp

Re: DVD player region
As recommended by some moderators previously, use VLC player.CDN_Z60m wrote:Why is it that we can only change the region a certain amount of times?? Anyway around this?
I only know these facts, I can change the number of region codes:
Thinkpads: 4 times
Dell: 5 times
Acer: 5 times
You might want to try DVD Region Killer. Find it here http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Too ... ller.shtml or google for it.
It's free and and so far I didn't have any problems on my Z60m with the DVD Multi Burner. It's definetely worth a try.

Thinkpad Z60m and happy with it
Thanks,
I am giving region killer a try. Do you use it with the dvd soft that came preloaded with the Z60m?
I am using the Intervideo soft to play my DVDs (am not sure if it has an ASPI driver which the region killer says it doesn't work with) and hoping it works.
Thanks again - so far this thinkpad rocks
- about the only complaint is the loose jangly battery pack.

In case it doesn't work, for whatever reason, you can also try AnyDVD as well.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I'm using PowerDVD 6.0 and VLC and so far I didn't experience any trouble.jasp wrote:Thanks,

Regarding the "loose" battery pack, you can always try some double sided tape, stick it on the battery and leave the protective film on the other side.
