Upgrade A20 cpu

#1 Post by makaveli559m » Sun May 21, 2006 4:16 pm

I was wondering if I can upgrade my 700mhz cpu to 900mhz, I want it so I can be able to install Vista without buying a brand new laptop.

Yes, the A20, same as the T20, can take up to a 1GHz cpu.

How sure are you that you can do that? Before I buy a CPU

In this forum there was a lot of discussion about upgarding CPU's in the A31 / A31p.

Similar approach applies to your machine. There are links referring to the Intel website and you can search for the processor family from which your processor comes. The you need to start looking at the faster processor, the stepping that these faster ones have and if those steppings are different check the BIOS on the download website from IBM if the BIOS supports that stepping.

EG Originally the A31 that I got had a 1.8 Ghz B0 step in it. Later C1 step was supported. But the D1 step (2.6 Ghz) was not supported in the BIOS until about four or five versions back.

That out of the way you have to consider heat issues. With the 2.6 Ghz I am running into those problems - the fan is barely coping. This is fine when you do intermittend "office like" work but if you are running CPU intensive applications (some games can be like this, in my case it is heavy calculations) then teh temprature can get quite high.

If asked if I would do it again? Yes, no regrets.

I'm positive, as long as yours is an A20, and not an A20e.

Here is a thread that shows you some options, even though it is for an A20m.

The T20 and the A20 are essentially the same systems. (ie. same chipset)

Thanks for the help, although I couldnt find the 900mhz cpu I was going to buy I did find an 850 and it worked. except it seems my laptop is running hotter. But it works :) now I install Vista. The Advisor says I can run Windows Vista Premium.

You might want to get an A22 fan.

I have another question, would a A22 fan fit on my A20m laptop and would a 1ghz cpu work good with it?
