Problem with Display on R40 (2722-2RH)

The following describes a R40 (2722-2RH) that was purchased in April 2003. Warranty has expired. This problem showed up in around March 2006. Prior to this problem, there were no drops or other incidents.

The screen, occasionally, has random blue vertical stripes (and other colours). The pattern is not stable and both the colour and pattern keeps changing. The situation last for as short as seconds and as long as hours. This happens both in Windows and Bios.

It seems like that it happens more often when the computer is hot and/or it is plugged into AC. This problem is reproducible in an external monitor connected to the ThinkPad. Is there a solution to this?

Yes.
Buy a new systemboard.
The video chip is dying.
