Can my completely dead R32 be revived?

#1 Post by tagawa » Mon May 29, 2006 7:37 am

I have an R32 - my first Thinkpad and a great machine until yesterday when it suddenly died as I inserted the AC cable while Windows 2000 was booting. The screen went black, all LEDs went off and it stays dead, not even a flicker, whether I try switching it on from battery or AC power. The only sign of life is a slight intermittent clicking or humming coming from towards the back of the PC when the power cable is connected, almost as if there's a fly trapped in the case (there isn't).

What I've done so far:
* Checked the AC adaptor & battery voltages with a meter - both fine.
* The voodoo-like 15 short power button presses followed by a 30-second one - no change.
* Taken the system board out to check for broken connections or signs of burning - to my untrained eye it looks fine.

Does anyone know what the problem could be and more importantly, what the solution could be? Is there a way of fixing this by replacing a particular component? And could this have been caused by me connecting the power mid-boot or is that just coincidence?

Thanks to anyone in advance for your help...

Daniel

Thanks for the reply riz.

I have the opportunity to buy the bottom half of an R32 (excluding harddrive, RAM, battery, keyboard, etc.) for $200. I'm sure this will solve my problem but is it overkill? Should I try to save money by replacing individual components and hoping it works?

Thanks again,
Daniel
