Z60t/p or Z60m/p as desktop replacement?
Considering a Z60/61m/t/p series as a desktop replacemnet machine when I get home. Anything I should know? I will probably go for the 15.4 w/ a high res screen as weight will not be an issue.
T60p 8741-C3U T7600 : 100Gb : 15.4 WSXGA+
T43p 2687-M8U P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15 IPS UXGA
Z60m 2531-MTU P-M 760 : 100Gb : 15.4 WSXGA+
Re: Z60t/p or Z60m/p as desktop replacement?
After years of using T series exclusively, I purchased a Z60m for the widescreen feature. I must admit I was hesitant, as my concern was the type of case materials used, compared to the T series. Especially since I was buying sight unseen.unimorpheus wrote:Considering a Z60/61m/t/p series as a desktop replacemnet machine when I get home. Anything I should know? Now that I have had it for a few months and put a lot of time on it, I can say that this is a fantastic computer! Given that I have a new T60, and X60s to compare it to, I can honestly say the build quality is every bit as nice. At first I was a bit concerned about the weight as I did want to bring it on the road (I travel constantly), however in my case the weight while not light, has not been an issue. I'm surprized at how easy it is to carry.
As a desktop replacement I think you would be very pleased with the Z series ThinkPads....

What type of work will you be doing with your new ThinkPad? Perhaps I could provide some ideas on which model to look at...unimorpheus wrote:Thanks for the reply and insight. Now to figure out which one.

z60/61m should be great as a desktop replacement. But i should also warn you that the z60t and T series are more closely related interms of build quality with the mag outer shell than plastic that was used on my z60m. That said there was no flex what so ever. And it is thick. But the new T60s are absolutely out of the world (except the small latch issue). I suggest waiting till you can get Core Duo in them. That said i have one with a PM and i am totally satisfied with it, they look very good given the 200$ rebate!
i am using Z60m now I after using it for 6 months I really impressed me a lot. This is the first TP I am using. Compare with the previous notebook I used it was fantastic. I don't regard Z60m as a desktop replacement as I always brought it along. The weight doesn't me a lot.
TP Z60M | Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz | 2 Gb Ram | 160GB HDD |
its all realitive to your needs. I personally could not carry the z60m around all day because my commute is a daily mile walk with my computer (and law books) on my back. Anything over 5lb is too much which makes the z60t a great size for me. None of them are bad machines just need to evaluate how you're going to use it.
vito brings up a good point here.vito wrote:i am using Z60m now I after using it for 6 months I really impressed me a lot. This is the first TP I am using. I move (or carry) my ThinkPad in and out of the car, meetings, etc several times per day in my travels. While there is some additional weigth with the Z60m I do not find it a hindrance. When I have a need for the widescreen, this is a well made high quality notebook. The minute one looks outside of the ThinkPad lineup, you find that other brands are all heavier and thicker on a class by class basis. An example would be Dell/HP/Hitachi/Toshiba all of which in the 15.4" form factor weigh between 6.3 & 6.9 lbs. None of these is thinner than the Z60m. In addition, there is not one that comes anywhere near the high quality of keyboard, display, battery life, and overall high quality of the ThinkPad. I find the build quality every bit as good as my T & X models.
xzjn9p sums it up best, well said...xzjn9p wrote:its all realitive to your needs. Up to 8 lbs is wrong. The Z60m does not even get close to 8 lbs. If one looks at the Lenovo documentation it says" with optical drive and 6 cell battery up to 7.0lbs" "with optical drive and 9 cell up to 7.3lbs" That's a far cry from 8 lbs.macdaddie0 wrote:I have Z60m and daily commute to work and carrying around is not a problem.
However, Z60m does weight up to 8lbs...
Since Lenovo only lists "up to" I decided to weigh mine in a variety of configurations. I used a very accurate scale to do this:
1) Z60m with 6 cell battery and travel bezel = 6.2 lbs.
2) Z60m with 6 cell battery and optical drive = 6.6 lbs.
3) Z60m with 6 cell battery and ultrabay battery = 6.7 lbs.
4) Z60m with 9 cell battery and optical drive = 6.9 lbs.
Compare the Z60m to these (friends notebooks) weighed on the same scale:
1) Fujitsu Lifebook 15.4" with standard battery and optical drive = 7.95 lbs
2) Acer Aspire 15.4" with standard battery and optical drive = 7.54 lbs.
3) Dell Lattitude 15.4" with standard battery and optical drive = 7.45 lbs.
4) Acer Travelmate 15.4" with standard battery and optical drive = 7.9 lbs.
5) Toshiba Tecra 15.4" with standard battery and optical drive = 7.8 lbs
So, as you can see the ThinkPad Z series is very well designed and quite light when compared to the other brands on the market.

Looking at my z60m and my t60p. The t60p is a wonderfully powerful computer for business. The T60p lacks some digital media features that you'll have to add on later. The z60m has a firewire port and a built in card reader for digital media. The Ti cover makes it practically indestructable (read my kids can't destroy this one like they did our family T31). It should make a suitable desktop replacement with the Centrino Duo chipset and a ATi descrete graphics.
That said - my clients refer to my Z60m as "the faraday cage" computer and slobber over my T60p.
