Swapping MBs

#1 Post by schen » Thu Jun 01, 2006 10:02 pm

I'm in the process of finding a MB for my project A22m and just wanted to double check before I proceed. I'm more familiar with the T2x series, so please forgive my ignorance if I'm off base.

As far as I know, all the A2x series MBs are physically interchangeable and there shouldn't be a problem to put a A21m system board in an A22m system. Secondly, I think that all the normal (non "e") As have the ability to change CPUs all the way up to 1Ghz. Thirdly, main issue with different LCDs is having the correct cable to go with the screen.

Hopefully, somebody can reassure me of all this before I go off to buy an A21 MB and take apart my A22!

I have (and had) A20, A21 and A22 projects going on and have mixed and matched motherboard and video. Video cables (that riser board??) seem to have a number stamped on them that matches the cable. I have observed that they all seem to work, at least the "sold for parts only" ones I have bought, even if the numbers dont match.

What do you mean by "all the normal (non "e") ??

I have an A20M with an 850mhz cpu. Seems to run perfectly although the system is marked 2628-4TU and is supposed to be 700mhz only. The bezel and lcd came from A21M with defective motherboard. The original CPU I put into a really old A20M and it runs only 550mhz as I recall. Not 700. That was a non-speedstep motherboard.

I was unsure if the 850 would work and was surprised it is running at 850. I took a chance buying it but it was cheap. It would be nice to know if the motherboard actually supports the 850mhz and is supplying the correct voltage. Conceivable it might be supplying the higher voltage that the 700 P3 requires. The bios does recognize the 850. I would not want to put in a 1ghz chip and find it overheats and burns up. They are not near as cheap as the 850 was.

If any experts here have any experience in using 1ghz chips in A20M or A21M speedstep systems I would like to know if these chips can operate at the correct voltage they are supposed to.

I am tempted to bid on some A22M motherboards on ebay. I still have that older non-speedstep A20M that a "22" will fit in and it has 14" display which is perfect.

1ghz cpu's seem to be about $50 including shipping on ebay. Higher speed tulatins with 512k cache are much cheaper but wont fit. That is too bad. There are adapter sockets for full size socket 370, but not for mobiles.

A2x Series

I mean the regular socketed CPUs that are upgradeable instead of the soldered in type that you find with the "e" types. I have since come across an "M" that has it's CPU soldered in as well.
