Power on without touching the power switch?

#1 Post by PerfectFe » Thu Jun 15, 2006 3:21 pm

Hi,

i have a R52 but no docking station.
When I'm at home I use a external monitor, keyboard and mouse so I would like to work with a "closed" notebook.

But how can I switch it on without opening the TFT an press the power switch?

In the BIOS I can't find any "Power on by keyboard"....

id hate to be that guy, but i think youre looking for a desktop computer.

why use a laptop like that when you could get much better performance from a desktop? it would be cool if you could power on with infrared...but the whole computer being off thing kind of gets in the way.

Hi,

no no :)
I know what I need and that's a notebook. If you are 50 % at home and 50 % on the way and want to have all your files with you and don't want to synchronisize every day...... ;)

But if i am at home at few days it would be cool to power on the computer without opening it...

And the performance suffices easily.

I know of no way to power on a closed Thinkpad without opening it and pressing the power button. You could, however, go to Suspend and/or Hibernate and enable the Wake-on-LAN feature provided you can send a single signal to the ethernet port when you wanted the system to resume.

Hi,

yeah that's in my mind too... but then I need a 2nd PC that sends the signal?!

What about "Waking on incoming modem call" ? If I put a specific voltage on the modem port than it should start too?!
(no, I don't want to wreck my ThinkingPad, but it should work?!?!?)

Even better, my 701c would wake up on a modem signal just because it was plugged in and the phone rang. Tried it with my T43 and it does the same. It appears to respond to any standard signal within spec that come into the RJ45 port.

so to avoid lifting the laptop lid to power on, you could lift up your phone and dial! lol, it seems like the american way to do it.

Hi,

hmmm.... i just tested it. It didn't work?!
I activated the "Power on by modem...", plugged it in an rang the phone - nothing happend :(
Maybe because it's the wrong voltage behind a telephone system (hey what's the right english word for the device that connects some telephones and links it with the ISDN??) ?

You don't need a docking station you just need the port replicator. I have one for my R30 and it has a power button on it that powers up the system as a desktop (I.e. ready for external input and output devices as connected to the port replicator. Just drop the Thinkpad on it and press the key. The one you want is slightly different than mine, though. But for the $5 on ebay it costs to pick up the one for the earlier R series, it probably couldn't hurt to try (unless someone here has specific knowledge that earlier R-series adaptors do NOT work on later R series models)

Hi,

And the cheaper ones mostly are "not suitable for R5x" :(

This is the one you need.

If you are quick it is yours for less than a Euro. Not sure if he will ship internationally, though. It's called a "Port replicator II". Some sell for $50 US, which is less than €50.

Send a message to the seller about shipping to Germany. You write good English; Germany is a Western nation; most reasonable people should have no problem shipping something of that size to there; I know I usually put "US only" on my auctions but have no problems shipping to Europe; it's the people in South America, africa, and parts of Asia who want to buy things and then send me messages like:

"Not taken care with calm slowly slowly satisfied all.please you have patience but they are much serious I have 100% positive feedbacks I to pay auctions always all thanks"

I actually recieved that from a guy who bought an item from me (WITHOUT Telling me where he was) for well over US$100 and then asked me to declare it broken (it was) and valued only at US$20...
