A31p and CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO

#1 Post by k2jsv » Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:18 am

First of all. I have to say that you guys rock. In a moment of stupidity I wrecked my PCMICA Cardslots on my A31p and I found a lot of great info on replacing it, and getting the internal wireless for my laptop at the same time. $60 later on eBay, I am squared away. But you've created a monster.

After a little searching and no results. Are there any Mini-PCI or Daughter boards for Verizon Wireless (CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO) data cards that are compatible with the ThinkPad A31p?

I travel regularly with my laptop and would like to stop having to carry several wireless cards in my case. It also has the "neat" factor to it as well.

I don't usually converse with "upstate" folks, but as you're a HAM, I'll make an exception.

There are probably mini-PCI CDMA cards from all of the major cell providers that will fit the A31p, the slot and cards are standardized AFAIK.

The problems are: 1) connecting an antenna and 2) you'll lose your WiFi capability as I'm unaware of any combo CDMA/WiFi cards beng available.

Nor am I aware of any daughter card for the A31/T30 series that will provide CDMA access, but you'd have the same antenna problem even were one available.

What you can do if you have a CDMA capable cell phone with Bluetooth is install a BT card and antenna in your A31p! That's what I do with all my BT equipped Thinkpads and my Verizon cell phone.

Not as elegant as a built-in solution, but I'm never on the road without my cell phone so at least I'm not carrying anything "extra".

Spoken like a true "Flat-Lander"... j/k

Anyway. I'll investigate a little further into it, and decide what is more important to me. I have a VZW V620 Aircard right now with service, so it would be a matter of changing the service to the different device. Granted PCMCIA cards don't total that much in the way of weight in my bag, but I am trying to reduce all the BS I carry around in my Targus Backpack.

I could always get the UltraPort Bluetooth whoosiedingle and use that too I suppose. I dunno. I have a funny feeling that my laptop is going to start getting expensive soon. As if I don't spend enough on my radio equipment.

Thx for the reply.
