IBM Thinkpad R40 cannot start.

My IBM thinpad R40 started mesbehaving two weeks ago. It was on stadby then the screnn remain blank when I press any key. I put it off and putting it on again it was just as in satandby with blank screen. After lots of strugle it started and worked for few minutes then when on standby again with blank screen. Only the two left light are on though when I put it on 4 lights are on and two goes of after without starting the laptop. It is so frustrating. I need help! The computer is as on standby but nothing alse work not even the screen saver.

First, try taking a look through the Hardware Maintenance Manualfor possible solutions. In the meantime, try removing all but one stick of ram, the battery, CMOS battery, optical drive, modem, any wireless card, etc. See if it will then reboot. If so, then replace one part at a time, to see if any of the removed parts might be the cause.

My R40 was having similar issues last week... same LEDs as you describe. I reseated the RAM and CMOS, and it worked. I recommended reseating the RAM *only* to see if it's sufficient to get things back up and running. Since I removed the CMOS, I lost my BIOS settings and had to set them back up.
