R40 CPU upgrade questions

#1 Post by Todd » Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:36 pm

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and new to messing around with a laptop, so this may be a simple question, but if I want to upgrade my 1.3Ghz Intel Pentium M to somthing faster, do I need to do anything besides phyisically removing the old CPU and inserting the new one?
The last time I changed a CPU on a desktop computer, I remember having to set dip switches or jumpers to tell the mother board what speed the new chip was... Is there anything similar for the R40, or is it all "plug and play" now?
I've looked around here and on IBM's site, and haven't found any info other than a diagram showing how to remove the CPU.

Also, how fast of a CPU could I put in the thing? One PDF file from IBM lists 3 CPUs that my model could have come with (1.3, 1.4, or 1.5 Ghz), and lists other models of R40 that came with up to 2.4Ghz chips. I'm wondering if I could put a one that fast in mine...

Thanks
-Todd

It is easy.

You can ONLY change to Intel Pentium M CPU up to 1.7GHz. No other setting requirement other than phyisically removing the old CPU and inserting the new one, as the system board will automatically recognise the new CPU. However, you may expect higher temperature and more fan noise. The 2.4Ghz CPU is an Intel Pentium 4-M chip, which has totally different pins. Don't mess them.

Someone in China did upgrade a R40 from its original 1.3GHz Pentium M CPU to 1.7GHz CPU. Here is the link:

Unfortunately, it is in Chinese. But still hope those pictures help you a little.

I did the 1.3 to 1.5 upgrade on two R40's without an issue. Both were Banias chips. If the Dothan chips work, 1.7 will be fine.

Thanks for the info... I'll post back when I find a good price on a chip!
