Lid/Resolution problem -- WHY WON'T THEY FIX THIS?

I seem to have solved the problem by uninstalling 'hydravision'. I'll monitor the issue to see if it crops up again.

Hey guys I am new here. Looks like this forum is an extremely valuable resource.

Anyway I've had a Z61T for a little less then a year now. Ever since I have had it, it seems to be having resolution/background problems similar too those described here. My icons never seem to stay in place and occasionally it even reverts back to the original XP wallpaper (the grassy hill). I haven't yet figured out what I do that makes it change, but it doesn't change if I close the lid.
I have everything up to date, do weekly virus/spyware scans, and am fairly computer savvy.

Anyone have any ideas or come up with a solution?

If it offers any help, I purchased my Z60M when it was first announced. I never experienced the 'lid resolution' problem until now.

I update my system using ThinkVantage every few months including BIOs upgrades. It was not until my last upgrade (using one of the many 'optional' features that I selected thinking it would be neat) that I had this problem since. It is very annoying and I can't figure how to roll back my system since I did not back up my system......darn.

I am dead convinced that at least for the Z60M, that it had something to do with the recent upgrades I performed about 3 months ago. I don't know what it is and I will perform another upgrade to see if anything solves anything. Hope someone has a permanent fix.

i don't have a z-series (t43 is what i am using), but i did have the lid closing resolution problem.

after reading discussions in many different forums, someone suggests that the lid closing resolution problem may be due to external monitor setting (i.e. the display driver thinks it should adjust to external monitor setting when the lid is closed).

taking this assumption, i have found a simple work-around that works for me.

- create a new scheme that uses both LCD & external monitor and set external monitor to use the same resolution as LCD native resolution (1400x1050). i created this scheme using Fn+F7, but i believe using ibm PM will also do.
- move this new scheme and place it right below "My Normal Display Settings"

this way, when lid closed, the driver is fooled to use 2nd scheme for external monitor, but still using the same resolution

this works for me, ymmv

Come to think of it, I think I may have had problems after I began using a secondary monitor with my laptop. Despite any attempts at changing my Display Properties, it seems this is a bug that is not gonna go away until Lenovo fixes it.

I confirmed your findings by hooking my Z60m to my external monitor with the SAME resolution (1680x1050) and voila.....laptop upon closing lid maintains correct windows.....too bad all my windows from my external monitor defaults back to screen 1, my laptop's.

As per the advice of former posts, I deleted my presentation manager.

Would the Presentation Manager be the same as 'Presentation Director' found here: ?

Lo and Behold, I'm now having the problem too on my t43. Not sure when it turned up, but don't think it's always been there.

I'm wondering - is it possible there's some interaction with ATI drivers keeping tabs on when the screen is down vs up, or something like that? I looked in my "Catalyst Control Center" and didn't see any settings related to the lid. But perhaps somewhere else...

I tried the trick of putting another setting just below the Normal settings in the F7 menu, but didn't help me.

This is a tough one. Not so bad when you don't notice it, but once you start noticing it, it's hard to live with.

I have this problem on mt T60 as well.

But I so frequently change resolutions anyway (I work on different external displays at different times), that just having a fix for this bug would not be very useful.

So instead I use "Desktop Restore"

It manages a different icon positioning profile for each resolution, and you can easily save/restore the position by a simple matter of rightclicking the desktop.

I'll be darned, it works for me ... at least at this moment.

I also noticed a few months ago that if i shut down with lid closed, the next time I booted up, it booted into 1024x768 mode until my power-on password let CSS log me in. Then the resolution changed.

For reference sake, I'm doing this on a Minidock with no external monitor hooked up. The new profile I created with the above instructions defaulted to an analog device, not a DVI monitor.

Addendum: Whoops, nope, after a reboot it's back to its usual shenanigans, re-arranging desktop icons when the lid's closed.

I may've resolved this, at least on my T43. I noted that a few months ago (after a System Update that accepted most of the recommended upgrades, of course), the monitor would not power off based on Power Manager schemes. I described what I did in detail in this post.

Basically, I rolled back my video drivers from Omega drivers, to the original ATI drivers and controls that came with the T43. All is well now. Apparently a newer version of something is incompatible with newer video drivers.

I'm not sure if I want to update the drivers from Windows Update (which always offers some) or System Update. After using this laptop 2 1/2 years, I'm increasingly content to use software that's no more than 6 months newer than the laptop.
