R51e keyboard is teh suck

#1 Post by bhtooefr » Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:37 pm

It's just been teh suck the whole time I've had this laptop.

Any way to retrofit a better keyboard? Such as a T4x board?

Hmmm, interesting. It happens to also interchange the "t" and the "h" characters as well? Now that is a feature I haven't seen native on a keyboard before! :D

Seriously, though, I do think that a T4X Series keyboard, any of the NMB Thai/China, Alps, or Chicony keyboards should work on the R51 as well if I am not mistaken. :0

Is this the same laptop you were raving about and bragging about only months ago? Is the keyboard really so bad that your composistion and spelling suffered as well?

Anyways, if you want, I could let you use my old 760 for a week and that should make you like the R series keyboard,

No problem with my r 52 keyboard and i had used my friend\'s R51 TP before. I tapped on the keyboard very hard and i don\'t find anything wrong with it except the tap tap tap sound.

That is very interesting.

The only problem with the keyboard on my R50 is that it will double the 'a' key when I press it after putting the Caps on.

LOL... I intentionally used teh. :P

Anyway, this keyboard is better than the Dells I support at work, but I was using my old X21 due to a, um, software glitch on here... and I've been using my Model M some, and realized that this doesn't compare. At all. ;)

Good to know that a T4x board will work. Gotta figure out what's in this laptop now (IIRC, the parts in laptop thingy just said that this laptop was made up of a... umm... laptop. ), and then head over to the T4x forum and see which keyboard is the most Model M-like (I haven't read that thread in a while. ;))

Edit: The parts in laptop thingy did report something...

It's an NMB...

Part number 13N9988, FRU 39T0519.

The weird part is, the T4x keyboards have different part numbers.

The T43 and R51/R52 share many similar parts, including the keyboard. If you think your keyboard sucks, try looking for another one with a different part number by a different manufacturer...

R51 and R51e are very different machines regarding parts.

Ah, right, but there are still many similarities, including the keyboard.

Exactly, like I said, I sued "teh suck" intentionally. ;)

Anyway, before I just up and order a keyboard... does anyone have both a T4x and an R51e, and have time to see if they keyboards will swap? ;)

I will try this on my friend\'s T4X TP and another friend\'s R51e TP. I will try this keyboard experiment and report back to you. :-)

Now, let me prepare my tools... for this experiment... :-)

Well, I've found some references on here to 39T0519 being the desired keyboard for a T4x... and as my Z key just broke off (making it REALLY hard to type a Z), and I've got under a month of warranty to go...

I just put in an ESC request. Hopefully within a couple days (after they call me tomorrow), a 39T0519 will be on my doorstep. 8)

Posting that 39T0519 might not be the desired keyboard - this is an NMB CHINA board, and it's the same FRU as the board I pulled out of the machine.

And, this board is just as sloppy as the previous one. Based on reviews I've read, I'd place the quality as equivalent to an Alps board - the worst.

However, I tested out at 87 corrected WPM on this, so...
