What colour is your Thinklight LED on your Z60T

#1 Post by umern » Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:24 pm

Hi,
Have had my Z60T for 2 weeks and used the Thinklight for the first time today and it is Yellow / Amber colour and not that bright!

All the other Thinkpads I have ever used such a T20, T23, T40, T41 and X31 all have a bright white Thinklight which lights up the keyboard really well.

Have I got a duff Think light or have they changed the colour off the light on the Z60T?

Any replies appreciated.

Yeah, they are bright white on the T Series Thinkpads and an amberish color on the R and X4X Series Thinkpads.

The tactic with the amber color is actually to help preserve your night vision (this is also why you see quite a few street sodium lamps that color as well) instead of blanking it out with a very bright white light. :)

I thought it was just because orange leds were cheaper than white ones

Then I am probably forgetting something, Dan

They have changed the types of ThinkLights they put in various Thinkpads multiple times; the ones on the X40 are amber as are the ones on the Z60t.

Also, in regards to them being cheaper than the white ones, that really doesn't have much of a bearing as to their use. If they were really looking to cut costs, they might have gotten rid of it all together; yet it is to save your low-light vision as opposed to floodlighting when it comes to the bright white ThinkLights. :)

if the amber light is anything like those that shine down above the radio controls on bmw's, it should make for a nice atmosphere.

That actually might be more expensive depending on the intensity of the light. Red is a possibility, as is blue!

It actually suprises me how many get a Thinkpad, work on it, and then don't realize they have the ThinkLight. I didn't think you could do that, but I have come across around 10 users who had no idea it was there. Which, I guess, makes for a pleasant suprise. :)

I'm not sure how it is on other ThinkPad models but on my 14" T21, the ThinkLight is nice to show off, brag about, fool with, etc but serves no real utility value here not only because I touch type (which makes even seeing the keys altogether obsolete) but the screen seems to shine enough light that the keyboard is perfectly visible in the dark without it. The only keys that really benefit from the ThinkLight are the F keys and the volume controls. Still, despite the questionable usefulness, the ThinkLight does go to make my laptop look really good in the dark.

The results are slightly different on the 12" A21m I passed on to a friend of mine has it's usefulness determined by the screen angle. He might get more use from his ThinkLight since he has a smaller LCD that shines less light onto the keyboard and he doesn't touch type.

I touch type too, but when it gets dark to the point that the screen is virtually the only source of light, the ThinkLight not only illuminates the keyboard, but the surroundings directly lateral to the Thinkpad thereby making it useful to take notes with, read, swap stuff in and out of the Ultrabay, etc. :)

I also touch-type, but in swapping back and forth between the HP and the TP multiple times a day, I need a little light just to help me make the transition.
