Z61t reviews?

#1 Post by magnus » Tue Aug 01, 2006 6:03 am

First I'll say Hi to all. I stumbled over this site while investigating about the Z61 after finding out that my University had struck a deal with a Norwegian distributor of Thinkpads.

I'm wondering if anyone has found any proper reviews of the Z61t. I've found several reviews of the Z61m, but none of the Z61t.

I've found out about one difference between the Z61t and Z61m being the screen size (14" vs 15", respectively), but I'm wondering if there's any other differences.

Either way, if someone could point me in the direction of a review or could share their experience with it, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Try this Z61t Review.

I have the 9442EAU model with WXGA screen and I love it. Upgraded the memory to 2 GB. Performed video editing with the integrated video card without any hickups. So far, I am pleased with my laptop. It came with the NMB keyboard.

Thanks for you reply, it's much appreciated.

The Z61 looks great in those pictures (granted, I haven't had much experience with TPs before).

I like to be able to play the occasional game while travelling or when I don't have access to my desktop, so my only concern is that it doesn't come with a better gpu. I wish it had an ATI chip of some sorts, then I wouldn't hesitate for a minute getting it, but right now I'm still unsure.

It would be quite annoying splashing out and getting a proper notebook and not be satisfied with it.

By the way, for those that are interested, the specs are:
  • Intel Core Duo T2400, 1.83 GHz cpu
    14" WXGA screen
    Intel 945GM chipset
    Intel GMA950 gpu
1x1024 ram (doesn't say which, but I assume DDR2 of some sort)
    80 GB(5400 rpm)
    8x DL DVDR
    WLAN 802.11 a/b/g
    Integrated gigabit LAN
    7-cell battery
    Ultranav
    Ports: D-sub, RJ-11, RJ-45, 3xUSB2.0, Firewire, Memory card reader (SD), S-video
    3-year on-site warranty
    mouse, backpack, network cable
In addition it comes with Microsoft SA for Office and Windows (free upgrades of Office and Windows for 3 years).

The Software Assurance is not necessary, I'm more than happy with OpenOffice and I get Windows through Academic Alliance anyway, but it's still a nice bonus.

What games did you consider playing whilst travelling? :)

Most of the ones that are, well, "easy" to play when travelling are not too demanding of the GPU.

If you want portable 14 inch widescreen laptop with dedicated laptop you can check out HP nc6400. You will have a choice of ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 or Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.

For me, I prefer the z61t. For light games as you mentioned it should be fine.

Mostly World of Warcraft (for those in the know, grinding, leveling and ah browsing) and Homm V.

edit: Homm V while on the road, and WoW when I get where I'm going and if there's a connection.

Unfortunately my budget won't allow me to get it. The Z61 I'm getting at a fairly amazing deal from my uni - $1900 USD (already about $300 USD over my intended budget :) ), which is amazing here in Norway, a Z60 without any software or extended warranty will cost me $2500.

If it's not the Thinkpad it will most likely be a Dell Inspiron or some other consumer notebook.

Seeing as this is the only "professional" notebook I can afford I'm so tempted, but after buying a HP ZE5244 a few years ago, I'm very weary (sp?) of making the wrong buy...

edit2: removed question about Vista, which I found by asking the oracle :)

I like those pictures!

I know the folks in the T series forum will be unhappy with me, but I've favored the Z series ever since trying one out at Office Depot. I like the Titanium lid too :P

I see that the Z61t series is finally listed for sale on Lenovo's website.

I found a video on youtube.com of a macbook (not pro) running World of Warcraft. Since they also have the Intel 950GMA I guess it means that the TP will be able to run it as well.

I played HOMM V on my T60 with ATI X1300 video card and 1.5GB RAM and during latter part of some stages, taking turns get quite slow. Same situation with Civ 4.

No problems on my T60 with X1400 and 2GB RAM however. :)

Just wish my school offered a deal on the T60 as well..
I know they do it for some programs, but not for the one I'm attending

Just an update.

Thanks for the help everyone :)

The orders have opened up for the Z61t at my school, and I'm just waiting for my student loan to arrive so I can place my order :)
