R40 problems, need help and opinions please

#1 Post by basscleff » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:27 pm

Hi all,

3 motherboards later, I am only getting green power light.
- no display on external source
- no post beeps
- removed all non essential peripherals
- swapped about a dozen ram sticks

Problems:
I just received this (known to be working) motherboard and it only supports a maximum 1.7Ghz Pentium M CPU. I only have a 1.8GHz. I was under the impression that the CPU's are essentially the same voltage and bus speed. (400MHz) and I would have thought the board would saupport it.

The question is, is my CPU simply not supported ( IBM specs don;t support it), or is it a bad CPU?
There are no obvious signs on the cpu that is is damaged. Since i have had this laptop, I have never seen it working.

funny thing I've also noticed:
- the motherboard will not power off with the keyboard power switch, or the power switch on the dock.
- I also tried a secind ccfl to see if there is any problem with my existing display, and the ccfl lights up.

any opinions, or similar experience?

R40 problems - help!!

#2 Post by ibmpk » Sun Aug 13, 2006 11:26 am

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum with a similar problem. Plugged in my R40 into the wall at my in-laws old place and a power surge killed it. Just got a seemingly working replacement system board from an e-bay store. Took the thinkpad apart and replaced the board but still no sign of life. Only the green power and battery lights come on. No display, beeps or drive activity. The other lights flash once then nothing. Took all peripherals off and tried again. Still nothing. No physical signs of damage but I'm thinking the CPU's busted too.

Don't want to give up this laptop. I think it's one of the best TP's ever made. HELP!!

well, once my cpu arrives I'll have a definite idea of what;'s going on with mine.

try reseating the cpu?
I had a t30 where I had to push the memory into the slots with extra pressure to get it to boot. try messing with memory in different slots\type of memory, and adding some MINIMAL pressure to seat it. :)

hmm think you got to get a matching CPU man :)
i think your problen is just that the sys board doesnt tend to know what cpu you are using..
and the bios and embedded controller are up to date on that board too.. so fetch a cheap Pentium M 1.4 ghz Banias with 400 mhz FSB and .. you are one the right way
