Waiting for my Lenovo Outlet Z60t MCU . . .

#1 Post by f1reverb » Mon Aug 07, 2006 6:38 pm

I ordered the Z60t 2513MCU top-of-the Pentium M line for the 1299 outlet price:

http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... d=10000001

2.26ghz
1gb (single stick)
Sata 100gb 7200rpm
DVDRWDL (the Super Multi 8x DVD+R, 2.4x Double Layer)
Bluetooth
Fingerprint reader
Titanium Lid
3yr warranty
free shipping (supposed to be but I was charged)
Thinkpad Atheros A/B/G

I ordered it Friday night and it's already shipped, and it seems getting credit for my charged free shipping is a pain as I've placed a number of calls and keep getting the runaround at Lenovo.

After looking at getting a cheaper one and upgrading to less than the MCU specs for the same money, it was cheaper to get the MCU. I can swap the ultrabay slim PATA drive with my R52 and also use the DVDRW in my R52 if I so choose.

I don't play games and wanted the portability of the z60t.

Am I missing the point of your post? Is there a question or point here?

No point at all, just general rambling.

Sorry for the OT but since we are talking about high end Pentium Ms.

I'm curious, what is the Pentium M equivalent of a base Core Duo T2300 1.66ghz in terms of performance?

Is it the Pentium M 760 2.0Ghz ?

This guide is a good start

I remember posting about this in the T60 Forum, I think it is in in the range of 3.2GHz-3.5GHz *for a P4* in realistic conditions. Usually, the speed equivalency is standardised to something like the P4. In that case, then it should match up more with the 770 Pentium M; using the 1.67GHz Core Duo mark on that equivalency chart as an upper bound, and a bit of table numerical interpolation (thermodynamics anybody? ;) :) ) we get that the range of [P-M 760, P-M 770] is a subset of the 1.67GHz computational performance; so it should *at least* perform noticeably better than that if it is loaded in the same fashion.

So, yeah...It is around the performance of the 760 or 770 if you aren't utilizing it alot or using programs on it that don't take full advantage of both cores, don't support SMP, or can't have Amdahl's law applied to them. :)

Hmmm...just checked the link. Thanks!

So with "normal" use, I get the impression that a Pentium M 770 top of the line 780 is just as good as the base Core Duo T2300. Or am I wrong?

I had an HP Pentium M 750 (1.86ghz) and its much slower compared with my T60. But then, the HP also had Intel GMA 900, 4200RPM HD, and 333mhz RAM while the T60 had ATI X1300, 5400RPM SATA HD, and 667mhz RAM.

Anyways, I'm curious because one of my friend is getting a new laptop and he's undecided whether to go for top of the line Pentium M or base Core Duo.

It depends. Office Work or Research/Heavy Computing? If the latter, I would go with the Core Duo (future-proofing is a bonus as well). Although, if it is not going to be used for super heavy duty tasks, a 770 or 760 would be fine. If "Normal" use is doing something along the lines of computational fluid dynamics, FEA runs of large meshes, or biophysics simulation then the Core Duo would be the better choice. However, there exists overlap in terms of performance for even higher end application. At that point, you have to consider other factors such as cost as well as how well it will do in the future for the foreseen problems it will be applied to and what applications will be used including the demand placed on the system as time goes by.

What type of work is your friend using it for and how long does he plan to keep it? Any plans on resale value?

Hmm..I would say he'll be more of using it for office work (MS Office, Internet, Email, running presentations) and some light gaming (no FPS style). For almost the same price, is a high end Pentium M 770 better than say, a base Core Duo for "office" work?

Actually, I have a Z60t Pentium M 740 on order (see my sig) for a staff and since he'll be doing mostly MS Office and Quickbooks on it, I figure its good enough. My reasons in getting it were low price, Thinkpad build quality, Win XP Pro, and the 3yr international warranty. I was considering an entry level Core Duo N100 at first but the Z60t offer seemed a better deal...

archer6, I will now ramble on . . .

It's a good thing I made my pointless post, as I'm having to prove to Lenovo they had free shipping for my 2513-mcu (and all the outlet TPs at the time), and my previous post sets a date reference for them, and I've provided them with a copy along with a bunch of documentation from web page screen dumps. You'd think Lenovo would know what their special offers are. When I made my purchase the Lenovo site was being worked on and you could only go to a couple of pages, one being ordering, so I had nothing to check for the free shipping or free 512mb memory module (which I didn't get either). Let's hope Lenovo takes care of this problem.

I'd recommend doing print-screens of any special offers on Lenovo's site so you can prove they actually did have a special offer. A google search turns up plenty of references to the free shipping offer about August 4. Anyone get a Thinkpad outlet special during this time and got the free shipping that I could also provide them with as proof? TIA.
