Reformatted G40's HDD, clean install of XP Home SP2, problem

#1 Post by Kerrith » Tue Aug 08, 2006 4:31 pm

A friend just bought a used IBM ThinkPad G40 (Model 2389Y11). It was awesomely sluggish for each keystroke and severely infected and only had 128 MB RAM and XP Home SP1, so I added 512 and a bought a new copy of XP Home w/SP2 CD.

Prior to my modifications I could surf using my DSL Ethernet cable and I'd hear Window's chimes upon boot.

For the clean install of XP Home SP2 I reformatted the 20 MB HDD. Now the G40 is fast but, the "Access IBM" button no longer works and the Verizon DSL installation software says there is no Ethernet Controller. The light does show at the G40's Ethernet-in port. Also I don't hear the boot theme, but when I press the vol up/down buttons I hear the beeps.

I have re-installed PC Doctor and Battery Maximizer Wizard (both work), but when I try to install the G40 Ethernet and Audio drivers I got from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site they won't install. I did this by downloading them and the drivers to my desktop and burning them to a CD and then copying them from the CD to the My Downloads folder on the G40.

Think Advantage only lists C:\Drivers\Ethernet\WinXP and C:\IBMTOOLS\Audio but when I look in Device Manager > Other Devices I see all yellow question marks.

I've installed "Software Installer" Lenovo\pkgMgr but it doesn't seem to work for the drivers.

In F1 BIOS I tried F9 (to restore the original settings) but nothing happened. I also noticed in BIOS that "IBM Predesktop Area" is "Current Setting" with no choices.

RAM = 640 (512 + 128) but also lists only 638 which seems to indicate that the IBM service software is still there.

My USB mouse works as does the Touchpad mouse

Suggestions please.

Thanks,

Kerry
