R40 running hot??

#1 Post by papillon » Sun Aug 15, 2004 3:59 pm

Hallo,
My R40 is about 3 months old, my first laptop. I am concerned that it is running hot. The fan does not run continuously and I always have the machine on my desk or a wooden tray if on my lap. Is this normal for laptops please?
Any advice would be appreciated,
Many thanks,
papillon

Nice. Appears to be what many people are desperately looking for nowadays, a near-silent (IBM ThinkPad) notebook with some fairly decent specs. ;-)

Download and run MobileMeter:

http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/

Right-click on its icon in the system tray, choose "Options...", then go to the ACPI temperature tab and make a mental note of the entry for "Active Cooling Temperature". Close the MobileMeter configuration window, start to work with your notebook and periodically check the temperature MobileMeter displays on your desktop. Whenever the temperature reading you can see there exceeds the value for "Active Cooling Temperature", the fan should come on. It's perfectly ok for the fan to stay off at temperatures below.

Best regards,
Monty

I have heard reports that this machine runs hot but I am not aware of this being a serious concern ,just an inconvenience really?

Hi Mitch,
Thanks for the comments, I d/l MobMeter and monitor the temperature with that and seems to be working within normal parameters. I found out that if I sit with it on my lap, it did get uncomfortable so I always use a tray or use at a table.
Thanks again,

Have had my R40 for about a year now. Recently noticed the unit getting hot underneath, in that below the area by the fan. Is this a fan issue and/or would you know? Thanks for you help. *NOTE: I've downloaded and have been running MobileMeter, in that doesn't seem to show any results.
Thanks,
Ralph
